Remember "Goldfinger?" The scheme was to make the Fort Knox gold supply radioactive and worthless, which would increase the value of Goldfinger's gold ten-fold. That's what the War in Iraq is all about:
George Bush and Dick Cheney are oilmen. Since September 2003, the price of oil has increased from under $25.00 a barrel to more than $72.00 a barrel. If you're in the oil business in Texas, congratulations - your oil is worth 3 times as much. And that's not even taking into account control of Iraq's oil, or the expected continuing increase in oil prices.
Of course, there are other benefits for a President who goes to war:
1) Presidents at war don't lose elections.
2) Presidents at war are able to act in ways peacetime presidents aren't with respect to Constitutional rights.
3) Presidents at war can use national security concerns as a smokescreen for secrecy.
And so on. President Bush was well aware of this on the campaign trail, and was reported as saying so (I think it was in the Woodward book).
Bartcop often says that anybody who makes a mistake that puts money in their pocket will tend to continue to make that mistake. Many in the Bush administration realized as early as the afternoon of 9/11 that the attack was probably going to allow them to go to Iraq. It's hard to believe Bush would have had any reaction to this idea other than, "Works for me."
