United had already moved its Flight Attendants to the brink of a "chaos" campaign of random strikes when it discontinued its pension plans on Monday.
Today, it is asking for a 25% cut in the wages of employees that have already seen double digit pay cuts, the end of their pension plans and the demise of substantial employee stock holders (the average mechanic has lost $60,000 from United stock alone). While the company has faced serious losses, it did finally make a profit in March and this new step will bring employees to the point where they no longer care. The fact that executives got $1.3 million of bonuses during the bankruptcy probably hasn't helped that attitude.
In my personal opinion, this move will cause labor strife sufficient to put the company out of business. If I were you, I would use your frequent flier miles fast and avoid booking flights on the soon to be liquidated airline. This cartoon sums up the prevailing sentiment:
