Finally, a government agency that's doing
something RIGHT.
Metro buses cruise for stranded drivers
Metro buses cruised evacuation routes today, offering last-resort transportation to stranded motorists who want to leave the roadside before Rita strikes.
"We are giving people a last option to get to a safe haven," said Frank Wilson, Metropoliltan Transit Authority CEO. "We are collecting people who have had some time to decide and rethink whether they want to weather this storm on the side of the freeway."
Thirty buses are operating along 10 highway evacuation routes, Wilson said.
Metro also has been operating "on-demand" transportation within its service area since Thursday, providing 500 buses to transport 17,000 people to shelters and safe places, Wilson said.
"We are providing every conceivable type of service needed," Wilson said. "We are using all equipment and drivers to help with evacuation throughout the duration. We'll operate as long as it's safe to do so. The mayor and county judge will make that call."
Mass transit. Good for traffic. Good for the enviroment. And, you never know, it might save your life!
