Updated: A Call for a McNerney Response

Thu May 10, 2007 at 05:36:51 PM PDT

(cross-posted from Calitics)

It seems pretty clear that many people in the netroots who worked hard for Jerry, donated time and time again are pretty upset with the new Representative today in his vote no on McGovern's Out of Iraq bill.  Heck, even Ellen Tauscher found a way to vote to get us out of Iraq today.

No Representative will ever be perfect, especially those in more moderate districts.  But this was a vote of conscious today and McNerney failed that test.  I think all those who walked those precincts, threw Jerry fundraisers and made calls on his behalf deserve an explanation for his vote today.

There was not a lot of time for us to get a chance to help whip votes on this legislation.  Personally, I think that is why I feel so blindsided on this.  There was no indication until just shortly before the vote that McNerney might be a no.

I doubt that many of us will be satiated by any response, but it will help repair the damage done today.

Please join my in calling for an explanation in the comments and on your own blogs.

I just sent an email to his Chief of Staff, who I met at the Brew House, with a link to the above and MyDD, FDL and DWT response posts.  I am sure Eden is around reading the response.  Hopefully, we can get a response today or tomorrow.

Update [2007-5-10 20:58:3 by juls]: I just heard back from his CoS who says she will get me an explanation some time later tonight.  I will update again when it comes.

Update [2007-5-10 22:44:35 by juls]: Here is McNerney's response.  Evidently he penned this himself.

I want an end to the war in Iraq.  But ending the war must be done in the most responsible way.

Today, I followed my conscience, after evaluating what I considered to be the most effective method of bringing America's involvement in this conflict to an end. That is why I voted for the supplemental bill and against the McGovern bill.

I am reminded every day of the terrible cost of this conflict.  In fact, on Tuesday, I received notice that a Marine from Manteca was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Our brave men and women in uniform serving in Iraq are caught in the middle of a religious civil war.

Hundreds of billions of dollars have already been spent.

We have been fighting in Iraq longer than it took us to win the Second World War.

I feel strongly that ending the war must be done in a way that respects our soldiers, honors our veterans, provides the best chance to reduce the violence in Iraq, and prevents the violence from spreading to neighboring countries.

That's why tonight I voted again - for the third time - for the supplemental plan, which I believe is the most responsible course to take.  It's the only way to ensure that Iraqis begin to take responsibility for Iraq.

The supplemental plan I voted for provides the framework to end this conflict by bringing about a diplomatic solution, which experts from across the political spectrum recognize is the only way to end the war responsibly.

I could not, in good conscience, vote for legislation like the McGovern bill that included neither specific provisions to bring about a diplomatic solution nor funding for the needs of this newly created generation of veterans.  The supplemental does both.

We have to be tough but smart to bring about a responsible close to the war in Iraq.  Continuing the war any longer than necessary would be unconscionable.

This was a vote of principle and one I stand behind.

I am pleased at the quick response directly from the Representative.  The speed that blogs moves is a wonder to see.  The statement itself, I feel is the best possible response we could have gotten.  Interesting to say the least, but I wonder why so many good progressives who care about our troops voted for it.  There can always be a GI Bill of sorts to come later along with diplomatic language.

voted No.  Blue Dog Rep. Cardoza (adjacent and more conservative District) also voted no, but that does not surprise me much.

I contributed to Jerry and worked for his campaign.  I am very disappointed, as are two others I have spoken with.

volunteered my time and donated money, I too would like an explanation. I am so disappointed in this vote. i couldn't believe it when I saw McNerny's name on the NO list. I am trying to keep an open mind and hope that there is a good reason behind this vote.

Maybe the Dem powers-that-be are feeling pretty stupid right now for throwing all that money and support behind McNerney when they could have put it behind Charlie Brown. I'm not complaining, the help we got was awesome in CA-04. But I know for a FACT that Charlie wouldn't be flip-flopping like this on something as crucial as the Iraq conflict. Charlie and Jan have a son on his 4th rotation in Baghdad. Any father with the power to get his son out of harm's way is obligated to do everyting within his power to do just that. Its a shame McNerney doesn't feel the same way.

Sent them an e-mail asking WTF?  This one is a real puzzler, since McNerney campaigned against the war last fall.  Funny, too, I just received an invitation to a McNerney fundraiser at the Embarcadero Center offices of a big SF law firm.  I was planning to kick in $250, but now I'm going to wait to see what kind of explanation McNerney gives.  Even Tauscher voted for the McGovern amendment.

This aggression will not stand, man.

  •  Just one person's thought (6+ / 0-)

Jerry is perhaps the number one targeted Democratic freshman in a (for California) very conservative, Republican-leaning, district.  You're talking about his vote on a measure which was, truth be told, symbolic.  On the substantive measure just passed, he voted "Aye," unlike purists like Waters and Kuchinich.  I guess you could argue that the leadership gave leftists a pass on the second vote because their opposition wouldn't affect the ultimate outcome, but doesn't that logic also apply to McNerney?

Maybe it's just my prejudice, but I prefer that someone like McNerney in a marginal district bob and weave on symbolic votes and get reelected so he can be a progressive vote on substantive issues like health care.  Pombo was an extremely reliable Republican vote.

In short, unlike many on DK, I tend to give our representatives a little room when it comes to what amount to tactical decisions.  In this, I'm always reminded of Lincoln's bobbing and weaving about the abolition of slavery (no action until 1863, then he freed the slaves he had no control over and none of those he did).  He would have driven the DK of his day crazy.

when you get the reply. I was very surprised at his vote. Point taken on the bobbing and weaving when necessary, but the Iraq war is an issue I don't think he HAS to bob and to weave with regard to his district.

So now they attack McNerney because he deviated from their agenda on one vote. Let's bring back Richard Pombo since McNerney can't vote like Barbara Lee!

Same here... moving back and forth between threads:

    Hi everyone -

Thanks for your patience regarding Jerry's explanation for his votes today.

Apparently, Jerry has to go back to the floor to continue voting. I'm here to answer questions about his statement if you have any.

I can't speak to policy specifics (not my jurisdiction as a campaign staffer) but I can possibly provide some context, having worked with Jerry during and since his run for Congress in 2006.

    •  Well (0+ / 0-)

I am more charitable. I am sure that your boss had his reasons for voting the way that he did. We aren't going to agree on everything 100% of the time. I think that it is naive to expect every Democrat to agree with what certain people here think 100% of the time.

  •  I can live with the explanation, but I'm still (0+ / 0-)

disappointed. I still don't believe he loses his district because he votes anti-war. And strict conservatives hate the war for cost/deficit reasons as well.

I appreciate the quick reply though, and thanks again to the diarist for prompt action as well.
