Contact lens solution recall

Sun May 27, 2007 at 05:47:32 PM PDT

A few weeks back, I suddenly developed a very red, sore eye. Just one eye, my other eye was fine. Family doctor examined me, asked lots of questions, figured it must be allergy-related. It wasn't regular conjunctivitis, but what it was - couldn't tell. On his advice, I flushed my eye frequently with various drops. Replaced my 30-day lens early. The redness cleared up, came back, cleared up again, showed up in other eye, cleared up, etc.

I was on the 2nd bottle of a 2-pack of solution. Relatively new case, new lenses, allergies really weren't that bad... what was going on?

Then I saw this news item Saturday night: CDC: Don't use that contact solution.

After all the heart-stopping moments with the pet food scare, now it's my turn. Last week, I had finally tossed out the bottle of solution I'd been using, threw out the case even though it was only a few weeks old. Now I'm sitting in front of my computer monitor, saying "Oh my God!"

Acanthamoeba keratitis is a painful eye infection that can cause permanent vision loss or blindness. The CDC estimated 85 percent of U.S. cases of the disease occur in contact lens users.   The solution of concern is manufactured by the Advanced Medical Optics Inc. based out of Santa Ana, California.

The possible connection between the use of AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution and Acanthamoeba kertitis was first suspected in 2004 by a University of Illinois-Chicago ophthalmologist, Dr. Elmer Tu, who noticed more than a dozen cases of the eye infection. Normally, Dr. Tu sees no more than two cases in a year.

Much as I hate digging through the trash, I tore into the bag waiting in the garage, trying to remember just which night I'd decided to throw things out. Was it still here or did it go to the dump last week?

Success! Found the bottle, and sure enough - it was AMO Complete Moisture Plus Multi-Purpose Solution.

Back online to find out what I'm to do, how long before I go blind, anything -

The company recalled 2.9 million packets of the solution last November after it found bacterial contamination in three lots sold in Japan. That recall included The recall includes 183,000 units sold in the U.S.

At the time of the earlier recall, the company blamed it on a water-borne organism that got into some solution at the company's plant in China. The plant was temporarily shut down and the company insisted there was no problem with the lens solution's formula.

Oh yeah, I feel so much better now. U.S. Workers scrambling for decent manufacturing jobs, and China is poisoning my pets & blinding me. You know what? My bottle doesn't say "Made in China," it says "Made in Spain." Can we believe it?

I'm really getting angry now. I don't know what medical treatment I'll need to save my vision, if any. When I didn't know why my eyes were turning red, I spent quite a few dollars on eye drops and eye gels. I'd lie awake, worried about what was going on. Now I know what was going on and I'm even more worried. I'm sick and tired of frights like this.

AMO said in its statement that "consumers who believe they are in possession of the recalled product should discontinue use immediately and call 1-888-899-9183.

What can we trust now? Our meats & vegetables are suspect, our peanut butter contaminated, our pet food poisoned, what else?

Folks, you're on your own.

    •  GET A REFERRAL NOW (15+ / 0-)

I have a young friend who got that same solution from his opthalmologist when he got new contacts.  He complained of what appeared to be an eye infection, which the same opthalmologist treated with the typical antibiotics.  They frogged around for months with this and it kept getting worse.

His opthalmologist went out of town, leaving him to see his partner instead; the partner, upon reading his chart, told him NOT to come into the office but to go immediately to a specialist.  The specialist recognized it immediately as an extremely rare parasitic infection (acanthamoeba) and sent him the very next morning to a university teaching hospital two hours away because of the severity.  The specialist told him that our town was simply unequipped to handle this rarity.

He is now making every other day trips to the same hospital for checkups and treatments; he is NOT on an antibiotic, but a highly specialized chemical treatment that they told him was more like a shock treatment one might put in a pool.

This treatment is NOT something the average ophthalmologist will have on hand or be able to treat.  You absolutely MUST get good treatment right now, because there are other potential problems with this infection.  If it travels to the brain and spine, you could be toast.  If you don't believe me, just Google it or go to Wikipedia.

Get to the doctor, get a referral, get to a specialist and do not take no for answer from your doctor.  This is NOT something to mess with.

Our young friend will never be able to wear contacts; time will tell whether he will need corneal transplants.  He is just now able to read, but is still very photosensitive even after a couple weeks of treatment.  He is lucky he was healthy, not immune compromised, and that his parents are able to help so much; this could have been worse, and I suspect we will still hear about a worse case yet.

This follows on the footsteps of the ReNu with MoistureLoc recall a year ago.  Even though that had nothing to do with China (as far as we know), it should be a reminder to all contact lens wearers not to mess around.  If you get redness or discomfort in a an eye - stop wearing your contacts until it clears up and you get the OK from a Doctor; and start with fresh solution, cases, and contacts if they are the soft type.

One thing Thom Hartmann often points out that prices are set by the market. That’s to say if a company saves money on labor (by using Chinese sources for example) they don’t necessarily pass their savings on to you, they retail price at what they can sell for. They’re just maximizing their profits.

Its manufacturing systems are growing much faster than its workforce can be trained to run them properly. Result: screwups that wouldn't happen in a 1st world factory.

It didn't matter too much when China made iPODs or kitchen utensils. Chemicals, foods and drugs are a whole other matter. These are what quality experts call 'special processes'. When defects occur, they are invisible to casual inspection and may be missed by instruments unless the technicians think to look for them. The only defense is to have a mature manufacturing process with tightly locked down procedures. China is a clumsy adolescent when it comes to this type of manufacturing.

The same thing is true in every other rapidly industrializing country.

BTW. I just posted a loooong diary on exactly this subject.

    •  ...or maybe a misplaced profit motive? (4+ / 0-)

According to the N.Y. Times, adding melamine to increase the protein content of food in China was a known "secret." The reason--more profit.  But now that all of our gluten manufacturing (except for one plant) has decamped to China, we learn that the labor-intensive process of removing starch from glucose was bypassed--melamine was simply added to plain wheat flour!  Took the F.D.A. two months to figure that out.

The glycerin that was really antifreeze and was added to Panamanian cough syrup with deadly results came from a would-be chemist (former tailor) who wanted to improve his lot and consulted a chemistry book.  Passing off anti-freeze as pure glycerin was highly profitable. Having it move among several importers made it appear legitimate.

Lead in children's bibs and lunchboxes makes me wonder if there is lead in the glazes of the Made In China mugs I've purchased from high-end stores at a good price--having no idea what Made in China meant at that time.  I'm going to order a personal lead detection kit and check. Meanwhile, I'm just using mugs that are not from China.

China is a heavily polluted country, and becoming more polluted as a result of industrialization.  Lead soil contamination shows up in lead contaminated vitamins that make their way to the U.S. China has difficulty feeding its own people. It is importing soybeans from Brazil--a way to import water, according to the N.Y. Times article.

Hong Kong has been worried that the Chinese mainland won't inform them if there are problems. The melamine in pet food scandal wasn't covered, and what about the pigs that were exploding in Guangdong Provence that farmer's were selling at "deep discount"?  Corn gluten is the latest product that has been questioned. It's all too hard to follow, kind of like the Republican scandals. Coverage has been minimal here as well so we are all guinea pigs as long as food  and pharmaseutical safety is not a high priority.

This is a country that, 40 years ago, was in the throes of Mao's cultural revolution.

It takes a lot of work to make things in a market economy without sacrificing safety and quality. It can be done. We do it. The Japanese do it. The Europeans do it.

The Chinese can't do it reliably - yet. They are under tremendous pressure to expand their industry. Wages on the coast are nearing $4000/yr. In the center, they are $400 per year. That disparity scares the hell out of the Politburo. They are under enormous pressure to put industry into the hinterlands - pronto. Manufacturing firms are springing up all over - many out of the debris of the old centrally planned factories. The people who ran those factories haven't a clue.

That's not a huge risk for consumer electronics. Worst case, they don't work. For food, chemicals and drugs, that's potentially lethal.

In 10 years, one way or another, China will figure it out. The question is whether we help them.

I can't get any company whose products I take to tell me if any ingredients come from China. One company said that all was well, the product was imported from Japan (who more than likely gets the Vitamin C tablets from China--if it is too expensive for us to make Vitamin C, then I question that Japan has taken on that task).

  •  Acanthamoeba Infections... (3+ / 0-)

are exceedingly rare.  There is a very high probability that you do not have an acanth infection even if you have been using Complete Moisture Plus and have had recurrent red eyes.  However, anyone with this type of recurrent red eye (or any red eye for that matter) should be seen by an optometrist or ophthalmologist and NOT by a primary care physician.

Personally, I recommend Opti-free Replenish (Alcon) or Clear Care (CIBA) to all my soft contact lens patients.  For RGP wearers I recommend Boston or Optimum cleaning products.

Best of luck if you do get diagnosed with acanthamoeba.  There aren't many (read: any) eye infections that have such a poor prognosis.

  •  Bright... (0+ / 0-)

Try Opti-Free Replenish or Aquify if you want to stay with a one step multi-purpose solution.

The sensation you describe as "allergy" is almost non-existent with peroxide based systems (Clear Care).  Peroxide based systems are "purer" in the sense that the peroxide systems have greater killing power and the lenses end up sitting in pure water.  The downsides are that the lenses need to soak at least 6 hours for the peroxide to fully convert to water and that you can't use the solution to wet/rinse the lenses before insertion.

Of course no one to talk to at 130am on a holiday weekend at the 888 number. Wondering why CDC issued this recall on a Saturday during a holiday weekend???? A recording asked me for my address so they could send me a "return kit" and reimbursement. Ill be seeing my eye doc on Tuesday and I am hesitant to send back the bottle. I'll be at RiteAid tomorrow to make sure it is off their shelves. Thanks for being so alert and writing the diary.

I just came by because a couple of your tags showed up on the new tags list for probable reassignment and got - well - an eyeful.

So, first, my ardent wishes that you get the professional help you need and my admiration for the community that is daily kos.

    ====

Tags are meant to help us search for diaries. Consistency and frequency are our friends; creativity and redundancy, not so much.

"Good" tags - we have thousands of them - have been used at least 30 times. Many good tags have been used much more frequently. Identify good tags by using this Great Tag Search Tool or review this list  and, the newest addition to our toolkit:  Tag-Finder.

So on to making your tags "stickier." I used the search tool to check all your tags: "Contact lens solution, Made in China, pet food contamination, FDA, CDC" and ended up with "public health, contamination, recall, trade, China, pet food recall, FDA, CDC."

Many Kossacks bookmark tag links so it is easy to find new diaries on favorite or hot issues.  Some even add them to their blog rolls to make them easy to find regardless of what computer they are using.  That is an excellent reason to learn to use standard tags in your diaries.

Thanks! And please post a follow-up diary or comment so we'll know you can.
