The Bush administration is taking special efforts to block the
release of new photos and tapes from the Abu Ghraib
prison. Some are said to include torture and mistreatments
of at least one child. The administration has said that release
of the photos would make the efforts in the 'War on Terror'
more difficult. That may be the case. The description of
the pictures and tapes sound absolutely sickening. I certainly
blame the personnel who conducted the acts. No one could
have received a direct order to commit such atrocities But
I put even more fault in this administration who, through
design or ineptness, developed an environment that early and
often, devolved into sadistic torture.
The tough guy talk taken too seriously.

Yes, it would probably further damage our image of the
world if these pictures are released. But I'll give observers
enough credit to distinguish between a rouge President and
his policies and a country who's majority now disagree with
whats being done.
Make no mistake about it. This secretive White House is
trying to block the tapes, first and foremost, to protect their
own reputation. Just recall the changing stories by the Bush
team right off the bat on the issue of prison abuse. When the
first reports of torture came out they were flatly DENIED.
Then, after the photos were seen by the world, they shifted
their tactics to say it was only an ISOLATED INCIDENT.
When even more photos made their way to the public they
changed the story again explaining that it was just a FEW
BAD APPLES.
With this latest evidence it is more clear than ever that this
was not an aberration of policy but a result of the poorly
planned policy itself.
