Well,
Steve Spurrier just resigned as the Skins' head coach.
Spurrier quit three days after the Redskins finished 5-11 by losing 10 of their last 12 games. Spurrier's record was 12-20 over two seasons.
Man oh man oh man...whatever happened to my beloved team? What happened to the days of yore, when the Skins could actually win games, get into the playoffs, and have an honest-to-goodness shot at the Super Bowl? It's enough to make a grown man weep.
I blame it all on Dan Snyder.
Just like I blame all of our current ills on George W. Bush.
Contrary to what certain others might say, I hate neither Dan Snyder nor George W. Bush, as people. I do, however, hate what they've done to two things I've held dear ever since I was a child.
And, when I think about it, they've gone about this corruption in remarkably similiar ways and for much the same reason.
Both Bush and Snyder are businessmen. Snyder runs his team like a business and Bush runs this country like a business. It's all designed to gain money. Like good businessmen, they're not afraid to spend that money, either. Like bad businessmen, however, they've made some really crap choices in how to do it.
Let's look at two things Snyder has done and compare it to some things which Bush has done.
Snyder has employed head coach after head coach after head coach, firing and hiring whomever he believes can get him ahead. Bush, in much the same manner, has given the job of cleaning up Iraq to appointee after appointee after appointee...whomever he feels can get him out of it.
Under Snyder's leadership, we've seen the Skin's turn over almost yearly as he employs free agents, making the Redskins the most expensive franchise in the NFL. Bush has employed contractor after contractor and business after business for each project on his agenda, making his administration the most expensive in the history of the U.S.
I'm sure there are many more parallels that can be drawn, but I'll conclude in saying this: I hope and pray that America can turn itself around long before the Redskins can, because I sure don't see the Skins turning themselves around any time soon...
