Ten Things You Should Know About The Ocean

1. The ocean is responsible for between 50 and 70% of the oxygen we breathe.

2. The ocean is a major player in regulating Earths climate.

3. Only 10% of large ocean fish remain.

4. The ocean covers about 70% of the Earths surface.

5. Over 1/3 of the human population globally lives within 60 miles of an ocean coast.

6. Less than 5% of the global ocean has been explored.

7. New previously undescribed marine species are discovered daily.

8. Between 13 and 16% of human protein consumption is derived from marine organisms.

9.    Global Ocean temperature is on the rise

Exponential growth is a wonderful thing!  It means that information can spread very quickly and we need for that to happen if we are to protect the global ocean and the creatures that reside there.  What exponential growth means is a series of numbers like 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,... where each number is the double of the one previous. To spread information that means each one teach two other people.  What that means is that if each person who sees this shares it with two other people and each of them does the same, by a week from now, the whole planet will know!  Each one teach one.  We'll get it done!

Akonitum posted a wonderful YouTube video about exponential growth.  It is a double edged sword so to speak.  Exponential growth viv a vis population is not a good thing...but exponential growth vis a vis ocean information is good!!!!  I'm re-posting the video he/she linked to here as I feel it is a really instructive video.

  The Fibonacci series actually begins with 0, 1 and after that each succeeding number is the sum of the previous two. It goes 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, etc.

  What you described is a geometric series with a ratio of 2.

      I was fortunate to live in Pebble Beach last year when I was working in Carmel.  What a gift to be able to walk out my door and go for the most gorgeous walk in the world!  Now I'm back in LA... :-(

      But there are beautiful flowers.

  Just wanted to correct you:

  Start with 0,1 and get the rest by adding up the two previous numbers.

  In case you care, the scale factor for the Fibonacci sequence F = {0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,...} is the Golden Ratio. It is not 2.

  And btw, Fibonacci has more to do with growth in seashells, flower petals, and that sort of thing :P

  The 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,... is what you want. That's exponential growth. And it grows very fast indeed, so everyone should spread this around! :)

      5 years old. Om Beach was kind of an inside secret amongst locals and only a few travelers and was one of the places you could swim in India. Now the beach is wall to wall vendors and tourists and the water quality has degraded to the point where its dangerous to even wade. At least I got to enjoy it before it was ruined.

      btw, the legend of the place is that if you get to hear the ocean roaring at Om Beach, you no longer have to take rebirth (go to Nirvana instead, enlightened, etc). I told one of the Tibetan monks with me, "Hell, I'll do it easy the way if I have to!"

          after my first visit to india. At the end, the monks took me to Om Beach and I snapped out of it within an hour of being there. Very weird. It even freaked the old (very) High Lama's out. So after that, whenever I visited and started to succumb to the local whatever, they'd whisk me off to Om. I hear a couple of them started sneaking off to the place at times as well after that.

      Recently after lunch looking out over San Francisco Bay I took this picture because it resonated that we are emptying the ocean with overfishing and filling it with hot CO2 fizz. I had just eaten some Tilapia and my dog had cleaned my plate.

      I saw the ocean as lonely and silent and emptied of life as my plate.
