It is not my intention to go Craigs List on anyone, but does anyone progressive live in Idaho besides McJoan?

I just moved back home and it is such a culture shock. Electric Culture Shock. In a bad way. Not in the sense of the song, which is still playing here on the radio, btw. ??????

There is no Craig List for Idaho.

What was I thinking moving here?

There's a church on every corner, but not anything else.

Idahoans take your God and shove it up your arse-all the way to Canada. At least in Canada they have health care. Wow. Universal Health Care. How very Christian like.

What's really discouraging is the way you are bombarded with robocalls and outrageous ads on local media in these areas. They work hard to create the impression that there are no Progressives in rural America. That's why the Dean 50 state strategy is so important. Getting one progressive elected in Northern Michigan or Idaho breaks the mold.

  ... I ever saw was at a roadside rest stop in Utah.  On the underside of the toilet seat in a very smelly but well built cement outhouse was the comment 'God is Love' in black marker.

  I don't know if that was an effective placement of that message but I got a laugh and a good photo.

  She followed a boyfriend who was from there back home. He broke up with her and she has been stuck there ever since. It's been about 7 years now.

  She's not thrilled with the place and wants to move back home. Unfortunately, home is the pricey Long Island, New York and she just doesn't have the money.

  Let's just say the cultural values in Idaho sound very, very different than in the Northeast.

  You know, I've lived in the northeast and I wish these people wouldn't be so snooty about how much better it is there. The northeast has EXACTLY the same ugly conservatives with the same ugly mindsets--they are just diluted with some more diversity and a higher population density, but they are still there.

    Here in the NW we pretty much have segregation with the cascades as a barrier. There are Republicans here but many in the west side are relativly sane since they have to interact with those of us in the reality based community.

    Eastern WA has Spokane but the rest (except for the indian reservations) is lost to the dittoheads.

      There is very little threat from the Republican Party in Washington.  My guess is that we've been pretty successful with Democratic leadership and government in recent history, and Republicans have been left to filing initiatives and challenging voters.

•  Many years ago I crashed in Coeur d 'Alene, Idaho

  I was on a cross country bicycle trip and I had a nasty wipeout on the outskirts of Coeur d'Alene.  I hadn't planned on spending any significant time in Idaho but I had to stay there for four days to fix my bike and tend to my wounds.  A wonderful couple*, complete strangers, took me into their home.  They, along with the other residents of the city, were some of the nicest people I have ever met in my life.

  *The couple also happened to be volunteers for the ACLU

  That is the only experience I have had with Idaho.

  in Salt Lake City. There I met a guy who was from Idaho and had never met a black person before. He was on his way to Los Angeles to look for his daughter who had broken off contact with him. (i thought to myself, "shes doing porn.")

  After introductions and hand shaking, he asked me this:

  I told him yes so that we could avoid what I knew would become a very uncomfortable conversation. His wife looked at me with suspicion. Luckily, my cell phone rang.

  In the grocery store last week, a guy in front of us in the checkout was ready to withdraw the troops from I-rack and just nuke the hell out of 'em.  Fuck 'em.  Give 'em what they deserve.

  Anyway. Supremely beautiful area.  Very nice people, in general.  Just terribly isolated.  Moving home (NY) the end of the summer and am elated at the prospect.  My kids and I have fantasies about how we are going to destroy the confederate flag flying over our neighbor's house as we drive off.  A flamethrower seem the most practical.

  ..about an hour south of Spokane, 8 miles east of Pullman, WA. Moscow is the home of the Univ of Idaho and a noted liberal island in a sea of conservatives. Insert references to "pinko communists in a town called 'Moscow'".  The rest of the Palouse and northern Idaho is desolate and fading away. No money except for the Social Security checks of many retired residents. No young people stay once they can get out to Seattle, or Portland, or Spokane. Lots of state money in the Universities though, Idaho and Washington State. I was there just a year ago after 19 years since my years at WSU. Pullman has thrived from Federal grants and state ag research money and tuition from all the kids who didnt get into U of Washington. Moscow is booming too with malls and fast food and stuff, but still a small town karma.

•  Ah, Idaho...

  My main recollection of Idaho is about 15 years ago I was delivering lift chairs for people with arthritis, elderly, etc. As an aside, the feeling I got watching people be able to get up and down from their chair - something many hadn't been able to do for years - made this my most memorable and rewarding job.

  Anyway, once I had a delivery in Bonner's Ferry, way up north (and an extremely beautiful part of the country!).  We couldn't find the address, so I called to get directions.  Somehow in the conversation it came up that there were two of us in the truck, and I was asked: "Are you both white?".  Coming from Sacramento, California (a pretty diverse city), this question hit me out of left field - my partner happened to be black, so when I told them, they said he couldn't come to the house.  I explained, to no avail, that the chairs were heavy, insurance didn't allow anyone else to help, etc.  No deal.  So I called back to Sac to talk with my managers to blow off the delivery, and as both my managers were black I figured we'd be on our way out of this.... place.

  To my surprise, they both agreed that I should drop my partner off somewhere and make the delivery alone.  I was furious, much more so than my partner or my managers - but I made the delivery, much to my disgust (these were your typical skinhead nazi types).

  I left my partner at a store, and quite honestly wasn't sure I'd see him again (that's how freaked out I was).  When I came back, he was there, of course, and I vented to him how pissed off I was, because I'd never seen such blatant racism before, and couldn't believe that it still happened in America!  He said something then that still rings loud and clear to me to this day:  "this happens all the time."

  My whole view of life changed that day - some of the blinders came off, so I guess, in retrospect, I should say "Thanks Idaho," but sadly in spite of the physical beauty of the place, I always shudder when I travel through it now.
