I met with Edwards yesterday w/pic

Sat Jun 23, 2007 at 05:42:53 AM PDT

Yeah, was was impressed too, i had went a "small Change for Big Change" event in NYC, billed as "meeting for a hour with John" which I was thinkin’ that it would be an exchange of ideas via questions and answers. Whatta I know, I didn’t read the fine print, and fellow kossasks were coming so it would be a meet up too. Like the poster yesterday who got a txt message saying "john wants 2 talk 2 U" and was somewhat disappointed when they got a voice message from Edwards asking for money, I didn't get to chat with Edwards, go figure, i got a stump speech, (more on that below) but, hey, if you don't want the corporations to select the president, then the candidates have to raise money somehow.

ok, it was a traditional stump speech with a txt message attached, but it was a cool experience. My first clue that this wasn't gonna be a nice sit down chat about the issues of the day, was the venue, Strata is a big bar, a hip bar, but it’s not the kinda place one sits and chats about politics.

so i find myself standing right next to the stage, like a groupie "Oh John, you’ll sooooooo groovveeey" The crowd grows, the appointed hour comes and goes, no Edwards, lots of talking in the crowd, a guy behind me, wearing a "Impeach Chaney First" pin is talking about Chaney’s lastest hi-jinx, the I’m-not- part- of-the-exec.-Branch- go-bite me-gate,  others in his group are surprised to hear this, ok, this is old news, like over the winter news, but hey I’m more informed than the average bear, I read Dkos, (among other websites, and read books, like armed madhouse, it’s a good quick read, I’ll wait, go order a copy),

We discussed our choices for president, my top non-Gore choice is Edwards, I don’t like Clinton (I think its sexist to call her by her first name and the other candidates by their last names as people/media do it all the time, and I don’t care it may be used for clarification between her and her husband, its wrong. I also think the MSM tends to call guiliani, rudy to make that madman more likeable, but that’s another story), i dont like Obama either, because i don't think either can win the general, so how's my man Edwards?

Well, the crowd’s building up, I’m still thinking there would be some interactive q&a. I am so gullible, there’s got to be about 1,000 people in the bar, (I’m just picking an number out of my ass, I haven’t a clue, for some reason that’s 1200 is the number stuck in my head) but hey hope springs eternal, I’ve got my question for him(and no I’m not gonna spill, make up your own questions), Edwards arrives, there’s chapping, cheering, hand shaking, (by this time, we’ve been standing and sitting around for like an hour), he takes the mic, and the stump speech begins. I’m pissed, I wanted grassroots, I wanted interaction, a market place of ideas, or at least a stall.

At least it was a good speech, Here’s a summary of the speech, it,  poverty sucks, it’s a shame that in this country there’s uninsured, hungry people, (luke warm applause), we need living wages jobs, protections, strong unions (big applause), we need to regain our leadership role in world politics, I would close Gitmo (bigger applause) get out of Iraq (big, "amen brother"-type applause) moral standing vis a via the world needs to be repaired, improve Africa,(applause) environment issues, cut CO2 emissions by 90 percent by 2040 or something like that (big applause), oil is bad, causes problems in middle east, they are intoxicated by oil (ok he didn’t say that, but close). now Edwards has me, the environment is my big issue, (and if it’s not yours I suggest you see or read an inconvenient truth) Edwards goes on with a really odd logic train,  - we should become leaders in bio-fuel, we have land and Europe and china don't, they will have to import for Africa, which will raise Africa out of poverty, (very idealist) then he goes on to say social movements in America can drive policy, i.e. the civil rights movement, Edwards then asks people start becoming involved, the next president can’t do (or un-do) everything by himself and asks people to txt message o five digit number,  End of Show, No questions.
Damn, where’s my marketplace of ideas, where’s my interactive, an informed citizenry, damn, Oh, wait there’s a few hecklers, oh, it’s the confounded 9/11 inside job idiots,
(is this a new york thing?). At the end, as I was fiddling with my camera,as Edwards starts shaking hands with people next to me, now it wouldn’t be polite not to shake, right, so I did, but I’m not sure where’s he going, and I’m holding
the camera, and I forgot to let go of his hand (and yes I’m
never gonna wash it again). I finally I remember to let go  and recede, ashamed into the crowd.
However, John (see we’re on a first name basis now) heard us, the crowd through the clapping, the words exchanged while shaking hands, the heckling, it’s all productive, for
him, for us, for the entire system, this is close to the way a democracy it was supposed to work.

Afterwards we, the kossaks, went to a nearby diner. Blogging is good, but talk is golden Jefferson would have been proud, interesting ideas floated around as we eat.
That was probably the best result from the speech, people talking like adults about things that matter. ‘Nough said.

BTW' i have given up on hotlinking the pix, here's a link to my flickr account with Edwards pix

(is this a new york thing?)

I happen to believe that a real investigation is needed for 9/11, even members of the commission know their report  was a farce.

Unfortunately, the confrontational methods used by some people wanting a real investigation do more to harm for that possiblity than to help it.

I didn't make the thing yesterday, but saw him on Thursday at Cooper Union; sometime in the Q&A with Brian Lehrer, this group of protesters gets up and starts chanting "Impeach Bush! Impeach Bush!".

This because, presumably, anybody in the room could do anything about that.

So it may be a New York thing, if two events are disrupted by two separate groups of people. We're an ornery bunch :-)

My husband and I wondered what the heck the Cooper Union protesters were saying. I thought maybe I heard the word "Bush," but he opted for "Get out of Iraq." I was also at the Strata event but didn't even notice that protest at all. The Cooper Union event was by far the best of the two, not because of any personal interaction (which I don't expect anyway) but because of a newer speech and an extended question-and-answer session. Frankly, with all the stories (see today's Washington Post of Edwards' abject "failure" in raising money--$14 million in the first quarter deemed "disappointing" followed by predicted collapse in second quarter), I am glad he only spent a short time with our $15-a-person group. I hope he had at least a fundraiser or two with big money contributors afterwards. Bill Richardson was quoted as bragging that he will outraise Edwards in quarter 2. Send some money if you support Edwards.

chanting about impeachment, and I think also something about Iraq. The funniest thing was Brian Lehrer's comment "Do you think anyone here disagrees with you?"

You're right, though; there's definitely a ratcheting up of the anti-Edwards hit pieces. I put it down to people being scared of him, because he's, from where I stand, the best candidate.

This Sunday's NY Times Magazine includes two letters to the editor in response to Matt Bai's article--both extremely hostile to Edwards (typical Republican stuff, trial lawyer, big house...). It is hard to believe that no positive Edwards letters were submitted.

  •  Seems like (8+ / 0-)

quite a few Gore supporters and getting behind Edwards.

    Thanks for the report.

Weird that he didn't take questions--he usually does.

  •  Loved your account (7+ / 0-)

Sounds like you had fun - this is my favorite line in your story

That was probably the best result from the speech, people talking like adults about things that matter.

Getting people to talk about things that are important seems to be such a challenge at times.

  •  I was there, too. (6+ / 0-)

Further back, sitting with an old union man who had worked on Adlai Stevenson's campaign.  We had an interesting conversation, he bemoaning the state of political debate today, and the lack of rational discourse therein.  We all agreed that Al Gore was the closest thing to Stevenson in the present group of contenders, and that Edwards (sort of a "Gore Lite" with a big dose of Southern churchiness mixed in) would be acceptable in a pinch.

It was a remarkable crowd, standing room only in a big place like Strata, well above its legal capacity.

Good thing there were no fire marshals there.

    •  One more thing... (7+ / 0-)

Edwards, like the other candidates, keeps buying into the Republican framing on Iraq, calling it the "Iraq War" instead of the "Iraq Occupation".

What the hell is up with that?

The Iraq War ended on Mission Accomplished day.  We won;  Saddam Hussein was removed from power, and is now pushing up daisies.

Since then it has been an occupation.  It's a damn sight easier to convince people to end an occupation after declaring victory than it is to end a war as losers.

    •  Hey, sorry we missed you (7+ / 0-)

There were apparently a bunch of dKos folks there that we didn't know about. We could have all met up. Oh well. Next time.

    •  No, Gore isn't like Stevenson (1+ / 0-)

Stevenson was witty. He had a voice like Ronald Colman's (my mother initially intended to vote for Ike in 1952 because he sounded like Clark Gable, but she switched to Stevenson because he sounded like Ronald Colman, even better). Maybe that's why Stevenson lost. Gore might be like Stevenson in being substantive, but he doesn't have the same style at all--probably no modern politician could get away with it. The speaking styles of FDR, JFK, and Stevenson are a world apart. That said, I love Edwards' completely different (really rather original) speaking style. For substance, you should have been at Cooper Union--Mario Cuomo said that was what he had in mind in organizing the event.

  •  Great report (7+ / 0-)

I enjoyed your writing style very much. A little humor helps a lot in politics!

I like it that Edwards has involved economic plans that consider Africa. It is refreshing to have a leader who thinks about long term results. The present administration often seems to act without regard to the chain of consequences.

I knew that Edwards had a lot of plans for how to help Darfur and Unganda in the short term, but I hadn't heard about long term plans to encourage world trade with Africa. I hope he will talk more about those ideas! I wish our country could help Africa, and I'm glad this is important to John.

  •  Hi Mad Cow! (7+ / 0-)

It was great to hang out last night. I, too, really enjoyed the conversation over dinner. There's nothing like talking to a bunch of super-smart, well-informed, like-minded and passionate people about politics, religion, child-rearing, etc., etc.

I commented in an Edwards post last night, giving a short impression of the evening. Yours is much more complete and colorful. It seems there were another of dKos people there that we didn't meet up with.

Hope to see you at the next NYC meetup.

    I trust Barack Obama.

So nice to have met you yesterday and have been part of that very enjoyable dinner afterwards.  LOVE your writing style...agree re. the James Joyce comment, 'cept it is James Joyce meets John Stewart!  Very Hip!

Really impressed that you remembered all the points so well.... And your reflections hilarious and thought-provoking.  Everything about the evening was so thought-provoking for me; the experience of being with such a large group of obviously passionate people who see beyond the media manipulations.

There was so much in the Edwards appearance and our 'meet-up'

Afterwards we, the kossaks, went to a nearby diner. Blogging is good, but talk is golden Jefferson would have been proud, interesting ideas floated around as we eat.

that I am still 'chewing on it all' and plan to diary it....

By the way, Trixie, you cropped yourself out of the pict..... tut, tut.... (chuckle!, chuckle!)
