Not much analysis since I'm headed out of here in a few hours. But in short, the Gravel boomlet is over. Richardson continues to tank. He had his own serious boomlet here while his poll numbers were non existent. Now, as his candidacy gains steam in the early states, he fades here. I'm surprised Obama isn't doing better than this and I suspect his numbers will improve. Still, the Daily Kos primary is a two-man race.

Oh, and 516 people don't care that Kucinich has become Fox News strongest defender.

      Information is only gained, not lost, by having two such separate polls.

      Further, I argue that a large crosssection (likely a majority) of the Daily Kos community probably would like to convey their support for a potential run by Al Gore by voting in such polls, and hence not providing that means is not quite fair those members.

          It doesn't tell us a crucial thing: where his support would come from.  Would it impact one candidate more severely than another?  Or does he bleed equal support from everyone?

          I mean, 25% in that poll say they've been waiting for Gore all along, and don't have a favorite.  But Other and No Freaking Clue only add up here to 16%, so there's a disconnect, unless those 25% are simply not voting in the poll.  But if that's the case, that's a rather significant chunk of DailyKos where the mood is not properly reflected.

          FWIW, my favorite candidate was Feingold, and most everybody's favorite til he dropped his run (due to 06 Senate results and subpoena power -- and his sense that America is still not ready to vote for a Jewish name on ballot for President ... but thanks a lot soft-talkin, back-peddlin' Harry Reid! You made Feingold's consciencious decision to WORK NOW to end the Iraq debacle, vs  in 09 as potential President, a mockery).

          Next came Gore, then Clark.

          But inasmuch as I would still be thrilled for Al to run, I really get the feeling, especially after reading that FAST COMPANY business profile, that Gore is thrilled by the business arena's willingness to take risks -- and it's apparently diametrically opposed to the "pre-dawn" mentality he spoke of in that article --- where his "ahead of the curve" thinking just doesn't fit with politics as a whole. He's an early thinker, and early adopter. Congress & Presidency is the exact opposite. It takes decades for them to get with the program.

          I truly believe he's found a more satifying calling that meets his brainpower and drive.

          When you think of it that way, why would he want to go back to the arena which is 90% fending off bullshit and spin-speak every single day -- vs making real stuff happen -- which he's done aplenty since 00.

          Therefore, I don't think he'll run - but he will use his newfound power to push the ethical and progressive agenda in our land.

          All of that said, I think he should be left on these straw polls. To exclude him seems something other than objective.

          A FINAL NOTE: (like Ted Koppell !)

          AM I mistaken or.. wasn't Markos fairly strong on Richardson after last year's YearlyKos? I kinda recall that, and people giving him shit about it, but I could be totally wrong. Regardless, things change, candidates show their weaknesses over time. I'm only noting this as indicative of that. And we're still over a year out.

          I think Obama will tank by then. But that;s just me. I think it's an ego-run and he'd have served America a lot better had he taken a cue from Russ Feingold: do the job people elected you to do, and do it in a timely manner -- vs projecting forward telling us all the things you WOULD do. The war still rages. Get out and be a man -- and go to work in the Senate and help Russ Feingold end this Iraq disaster. You'd prime yourself all the MORE for that all important 2016 run that you REALLY have your eye on, and the sole purpose why you arre running now: Brand-building.

          If we can't have Russ, I surely don't want you; you've done nothing as a US Senator. Maybe you should try that first.

            is the only candidate with a chance to win, primary or general, who was an OUTSPOKEN OPPONENT OF THE WAR BEFORE IT STARTED.  That is the most important difference between the democratic candidates, in my opinion.  Obama saw this war was a terrible idea, and prophetically predicted most of the calamaties that have occured in Iraq.  Edwards, Hilary, Richardson, Dodd, Biden - all voted for the war.  They used the powers granted to them by the votes of the American people to send our armed forces to invade Iraq.

            If the only major criticism of Obama is lack of national-level political experience, then my vote is still confidently w/ Obama.  I don't see spending 10-20 years in the senate as the way to train to be President.  

            Note: Edwards has similarly little experience.

                people in San Francisco were reading BBC, Guardian, and a variety of alt-news in late 2002 - 2003, and like most here at dKos, nothing at all was mysterious about this PNAC-driven game of distraction & manipulation. I mean it doesn't take MUCH smarts at all to understand how wrong and illegal that pre-emptive strike was, nor what would happen post-invasion.

                The fact that so many people voted to authorize surely can't be because they were really stupid. More likely all were just playing their own personal variations on "the calculus" (as they love to call it in the Beltway) -- and I don't forgive any of them.

                My points were about real leadership vs speaking out and saying all the right things. Russ Feingold is one of our nation's very few leaders. And that's a shame he's been out there surrounded mostly by tumble weeds all blowing about the ghost town -- kicking up dust, not really on any course or destination.

                  Obama as sincere.  I don't think there's any brand-building or ego-boosting going on.  From my perspective, I believe he sees him becoming President as possible and a more direct solution to the major problems our country faces today.  I have a great deal of respect for Russ Feingold - its why I usually find myself watching Judiciary Committee hearing whenever possible.  I wish he had ran/will run sometime in the future.

    I went to a Richardson event in a suburb of Des Moines and at least 200 people were there.  That's a big crowd for a Friday night in a Republican leaning area.

    His campaign ads are cute.  And he is pushing his expirence.

    I thought he might take Edwards' supporters, so I'm glad to see that one poll has him mostly pulling from Barack.

    I would not be surprised to see him finish in the top 3.  But I'm not sure who he bumps.

      Lets see...I assume then, according to you:

      Kucinich calling for single-payer health insurance-get attention
      Kucinich voting correct on IWR -get attention
      Kucinich correct on Patriot Act -get attention
      Kucinich calls for cutting off additional funds for Iraq War -get attention.

      According to you Kucinich does all these things just for the attention. Of course that is absurd, and unprovable, but even if it were true, I'd still take his rational bold stances on these things over many of the stances and votes of our less courageous candidates.

          Dennis is going on FoxNews because he's not high in the polls but wants to get his message out anyway.  If any of the top three or Richardson were as low in the polls as Kucinich, they'd likely be on Fox News in a hot minute.

          Remember, HRC has fundraising parties thrown by Murdoch himself.  ... But Kucinich is clearly worse for taking free air time.

  •  Hillary's about to get a bounce up

    If she just behaves herself and doesn't go too negative and doesn't make more headlines for hiring push pollers, then she will start to trend up just because Edwards and Obama are plateauing right now and Hillary hasn't imploded. She hasn't taken off, but she hasn't fallen off the map like Richardson, even in Daily Kos hostile territory, and I really think people are going to give her another look.

    If Gore enters the race, maybe that would hurt Hillary, but I think anything he, Edwards or Obama really do to actively campaign against Hillary will hurt them more than it hurts her, because, so far, she has taken a licking and kept on ticking. The people who are beating up on her at this point look like bullies piling on to throw rocks at the smart kid. Yes, she's an annoying smart kid, but the rock throwing is getting to feel excessive.

    I'm not particularly a Hillary supporter, but I'm finding that, just because of the pure dynamics of the primary season, anything people here post against her these days makes me start mentally coming up with reasons why Edwards is further to the right than she is.

    I don't think my reaction means that Hillar necessarily going to get the nomination, but I think what it means that, within a month or two, Hillary Clinton is going to get a lot of attention and have a chance to make herself a solid finalist for the nomination -- or to wash herself out of the race. But she's directly going to decide her fate. I don't think any arguments her opponents make or any skeletons her opponents find in her closet are going to do anything to her.

          I noticed you both referred to two different sectors of the Health Industry.

          Are they reported differently? As you state, there are lots of regular people (i.e. nurses) in health care that I think trend progressive, and it would be a shame to lump them in with the insurance money.

          The health insurance industry and their lobbying arm are the biggest impediment to national single-payer health care here. Perhaps we should just buy them out and be done with it. Would probably be cheaper in the long run.
