Daily Kos' Lieberman obsession, or are we serious

Fri Jun 29, 2007 at 07:31:56 AM PDT

about building a 60-seat+ majority in the United State Senate?

Friends, we are a day away from the 2nd quarter fundraising deadline. Our candidates have about 40 hours left to show the depth and breadth of their support.

Last week, when Joe Lieberman hosted a $3K-a-plate fundraiser for Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, the blogosphere erupted in its usual show of Joe Loathing. MoveOn claimed to raise $355K in 24 hours for Collins challenger Tom Allen and fellow Rep. Patrick Murphy of Pennsylvania. Markos front-paged the effort twice within 24 hours (here and here), and Miss Laura brought it up again yesterday.

Meanwhile, another Senate candidate - former U.S. Rep. Larry LaRocco of Idaho - stopped by Kos to do his second diary this month on Wednesday. No one noted it on the front page. It didn't make the recommended list. It basically sunk without a trace

The Lieberman Obsession is all well and good. Joe deserves all the derision we can send his way. But I submit that when a viable U.S. Senate candidate takes the time to engage Kossacks, it should at least be given a quick plug on the front page, so people can take note and check it out while it's happening. mcjoan did this with LaRocco's first visit on June 5. The diary got nearly 100 comments and rode the recommended list for several hours. But the rest of the front pagers ignored Larry LaRocco this week, and that's a damn shame.

LaRocco takes out the trash

It's a shame because LaRocco is a great candidate. (Disclosure here: I am on his staff.) As I write this, LaRocco is working a shift helping a certified nursing assistant at a Pocatello nursing home. Two weeks ago, he hauled garbage in Orofino, ID. As LaRocco wrote Wednesday, "Two weeks ago I launched my 'Working for Senate' campaign in Idaho.  And for the next 16 months I will take jobs through Idaho and work side by side with voters and listen to their concerns about our state and country. The fact is, Idahoans are tired of being taken for granted by aloof politicians who have no idea what working families are encountering in their daily lives. I will take no voter for granted."

Yes, Idaho is heavily Republican, and Democrats always face a tough slog here. But the tide started to turn a few years ago, when Boise elected a Democratic state lawmaker as its mayor. The gains continued in 2006, when Democrats picked up six seats in the state legislature (coming close on three more seats) and Kossacks helped Larry Grant come within 5% of winning in the ID-01, a district George W. Bush won by nearly 40% in both 2000 and 2004. Idaho is widely seen as the next Montana, and people are starting to talk about LaRocco as the next Jon Tester.

What's more, LaRocco is fighting a most vulnerable incumbent, Larry Craig, who is on retirement watch. Aside from nagging questions about Craig's personal life, he has failed both in his efforts to reform immigration and to give veterans the benefits the deserve. Idaho blogger Mountain Goat did a great post this week titled "A Tale of Two Larrys," noting the stark differences between a candidate who wants to mingle with Idaho voters and an incumbent who this week sought to limit benefits to veterans.

As of this morning, Tom Allen has raised more than $25K from 577 people on ActBlue - most of it this last week, and mostly because Markos wrote on Page 1 , "Anyone wanting to add an exclamation point to this hearty F.U. to Lieberman should consider dropping $10 or whatever to Allen."

Meanwhile, as of 8 a.m., Larry LaRocco has netted $6,411 in donations from 50 people on ActBlue. Yet both Allen and LaRocco represent one more potential Democratic Senate vote against prolonging the war in Iraq, one more Senate vote toward solving the health care crisis, one more Senate vote for transparency and accountability in government.

Alen will clearly have the funds to mount a robust campaign against Collins (and Army of One Lieberman)? But what about Larry LaRocco? We need a 60+ majority. Help make it happen.

    Absolutely. He's a Republican. Let's move on.

In the same way that the flood of Ann Coulter diaries distract us from other issues (e.g., overturning integration, impeaching Cheney) we desperately need GOOD Dem candidates to back.

Thanks for this - let's get back to work!

It's funny how there are many diaries complaining about candidates popping in here and expecting special treatment and then there are diaries (like this one) complaining that candidates are not getting special treatment.  Personally I think candidate diaries should sink or swim on their own merit and should be treated as everyone elses is.  But that is just me and I will bow to whatever the powers that be decide.

... too many diaries start out with this "you're all stupid, so please rec my diary and support my candidate or cause".

This got my attention because I've been thinking lately how Lieberman is more than just Lieberman. It's not just about "derirsion" and "obsession" and bearing a grudge and whatever else the eleventy-fifteen "get over Lieberman" diaries and comments in the last week have said. Every thing about that race sums up about fifty per cent of the Democrats' problems: the unwillingness to play hardball; the need to be liked and approved by other pols and pundits (Joe Biden recently said he's a serious candidate because "the press wants him in the race", and cited Broder, Mark Shields, and Eleanor Clift as having said nice things about him); putting 'friendship' and "c-o-m-i-t-y" before the best interests of the party (to say nothing of the country); the inability to recognize people and issues for what they are; always being six months behind the curve, etc.

BUT, MORE ON TOPIC, as some who sends a fair bit of money around the country, from Maine to Hawai'i and Virginia to Montana, and I'll do it again in Idaho if it comes to that, I don't like being told I'm doing it wrong. The fact is that taking out Susan Collins is important substantively and symbollically. And we can, as a national party, and as a great big communal blog, address more than one topic, more than one race at a time. Throwing pies is not a good opening gambit when you're seeking to persuade people.

But I will rec this diary in hopes of ginning up some support for LaRocco, because I am, in fact, serious about building a 60+ majority.

to getting a mention somewhere that will stay around longer than an hour.

When a candidate or supporter starts a diary, they're an unknown name to almost everyone. Unless they're both careful in their time of posting and are not unlucky, they'll just flash by unnoticed. Most of the diarists that I read wouldn't get read by me except that I have them on my hotlist, and that they often end up on the rescue list.

A brand new name might zip by during the hours I can't be on line, unless they were doing daily diaries it could be some time before I noticed them.

Seeing as the stated purpose of DKos is to elect Democrats, preferably good ones that the typical reader here would happily support, having some way of locating candidates' diaries would seem to be forwarding that goal.  Maybe just a page listing candidate diarists, with a link on the front page to it, would do the job. This would allow readers to find new candidates, start reading their diaries, and if those were goo then they'd get the rec-list promotions. If there's too much drive-by from a candidate, then they'll end up getting ignored by all but their supporters and the sprinkling of newcomers.

Whatever, if you read Larry's diaries, I think you wil agree they definitely have merit. On this last one in particular, he answered almost every question, and he had some very tough ones.

Diarying here is like a high-wire act for candidates. They have to be quick-witted, type fast, and be super organized. It's a great way to demonstrate merit, and I believe Larry has.

the community has a right to judge the viability of candidates.  I am sure LaRocco can convince us, but it is the job of him and his supporters to do so.  I appreciate and support what the diarist is trying to do here, but disagree with the entitlement mentality.  As soon as there is a poll or any other evidence we can win the seat, I have no doubt the community will be behind the candidate one thousand percent.

Look, if anybody showed up off the street, declared a candidacy, and expected front-page mentions, I'd scoff, too.

But LaRocco is a former two-term member of the US House of Representatives. He was an Army military intelligence officer (we love veterans here, do we not?!) and worked in Congress many more years on the staff of one of our greatest-ever senators, Frank Church.

He is a viable candidate who is making a serious run and who is attracting serious attention. And this is the Senate we're talking about.

Regardless, Larry will be back and he will continue to engage Kossacks. I just hope he'll be seen when he does.

Given what happened last year with Lamont (in the primary), Tester, and Webb, I'd argue that we can help create the buzz around a candidate that will drive polls once they are taken. (No polls yet here in Idaho since Craig isn't yet sure whether he'll run ... and Idaho is not a poll-heavy state, anyway.)

and agree with the substance of what you are trying to do, just thought your tone was a little off.  I was lurking around here in 2004, when in the opinion of many, this site was played by candidates raising money here despite having no chance of winning, some weren't even running serious campaign.  Not suggesting AT ALL this is the case here, just endorsing the community being careful, I realize your candidate is serious and probably the best one for the Democrats in Idaho.  It looks like you already have a lot of support here, so I'm sure this argument will be moot soon :-)

keeps harping on Joe is that it is an example of efforts to not just get more Democrats elected, but more importantly, to improve the ones we have.

Now, not too many bad Democrats have been shunted aside, Lieberman and St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly, the latter being the idiot who endorsed Bush at the GOP National Convention in 2004 and got beat 3 to 1 by another Democrat the following year. And we're stuck with far too many faux Democrats, including many in the leadership (and I'm not naming names because I don't feel like a flame war).

Holding up Joe in derision serves to enhance the frame that center-left blogs like this are not just partisan cheerleaders for the Democratic party, but also, that they would like to improve it as well.

The frame fits the facts in varying degrees, and when the frame parts from the facts overmuch, the frame gets accentuated more.

This will probably get me flamed a bit, but for example, I find the near-constant presence of two Edwards diaries on the rec list to be irritating.  He's great and all, I guess, and he's got a hell of a talent for press releases, but do we really need the constant cheerleading when there is so much other important organizing and activism to do?
