    I'm beginning to wonder how he could possibly be effective as a diplomat.  He comes across as mildly rude and not a particularly good listener.  Maybe he was just intent on reciting his playbook of soundbites during the debate last night, but I found it difficult to believe that he'd ever participated in a bilateral talk of any sort.

    Maybe he's good behind closed doors--but that's not always where the Secretary of State is.  

    My pick for SoS?  What about Bill Clinton?

      ...put him in power, is a somewhat thuggish patron system, in the old-style Hispanic-sense with roots in the feudal organization of the early Spanish colonial days.  The way it works, all too often, is a lot like the Bushes - personal loyalty over principle, and punishment for those who display any disloyalty.

    Mr. Richardson’s physicality and roughhousing have also drawn rebukes. In his autobiography from 2005, "Between Worlds," Mr. Richardson recalled negotiating with Saddam Hussein in 1995 and, in a gesture of good will, touching President Hussein’s arm.

    "Saddam started," he recalled, "and along the wall eight hands suddenly touched sidearms."

    In late 2005, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish told The Albuquerque Journal that Mr. Richardson "pokes me" when they sit together, calling that more annoying and likely to be misconstrued than improper.

    "He pinches my neck," Ms. Denish said. "He touches my hip, my thigh, sort of the side of my leg."

    The governor waved that off, telling The Journal: "I tease Diane. I touch guys. It’s my way of lessening tension."

    This guy needs to learn to keep his tension to himself. If he can't handle the tension of a state with less than 2 million population where the money (to the state coffers) is rolling in. how the hell will he manage the tension of the presidency or even the Sec of State.

    He can be a low level assistant dedicated to dealing with sleaze.

      I did the poll. Richardson has the best resume since George Bush, Sr.-- and, unlike GHWB, he actually did something in each of his former jobs.

      GHWB didn't seem to leave footprints in the snow.

      That said, I'm not sure who I'm voting for.

  He did not do well. He did badly in the first debate too. I think Richardson is a very hands-on guy who is better at action than at talking. Not great in debates or interviews.

    In these debates we always see him essentially repeat the same points:

    "I'm a governor. I'm from New Mexico. I love being a governor. I love being from New Mexico. You too should love that I'm a governor. You too should love that I'm from New Mexico. Because I can get things done. And I can win. I'm a governor. From New Mexico."

    The thing is, he's been a solid governor with a good record to run on. But he's bad in debates and not great in interviews.

        If a safe way could be found to get it into space it would be an effective method to get rid of the waste... admittedly it would be very difficult to find a safe way to actually get it into space in the first place.

        Richardson has said many times that he doesn't really like nuclear power as some kind of end-all for energy and that wind, solar, etc. would be much better solutions do to the very problems of waste disposal.

        Also the issue is by no means as cut and dry as you propose -

        The capsule itself must protect its radioactive cargo not only from the demands of a normal launch with its severe atmospheric heating and aerodynamic loading, but also from potential accidents ranging from reentry into the atmosphere to a seriously flawed launch that would send the capsule into the high pressures of the ocean’s depths or into land. Summing up the engineering challenges, Bob Carpenter, the program manager for Orbital Sciences’ space nuclear power program, cautioned, "I’m not saying they are insurmountable, but they are major technical issues to be solved."

        Jordin Kare, now an independent aerospace consultant, was more optimistic. The laser can accelerate the capsule slowly in the lower atmosphere, reducing heating. Furthermore, noted NASA nuclear engineer Dr. Robert C. Singleterry, the same aerobraking analyses and technologies that use a planet’s atmosphere to slow down a visiting spacecraft as the Mars Global Surveyor demonstrated in 1997 can ensure the control of a capsule leaving the earth’s atmosphere.

While technologically impressive, developments in tunnel boring have far less potential. Disposal in any form will be expensive. Space disposal at least offers a major spinoff, inexpensive access to space. Putting a small surcharge—a fraction of a cent per kilowatt-hour of electricity—on power generated by nuclear reactors would handle the operational costs.

          As far as the option of space disposal of radioactive waste goes (shudder) that kind of thinking kind of lays to rest the whole too cheap to meter big lie, doesn't it. So I wonder how the governor plans to pay for launching radioactive waste into space without raising taxes.

    I don't know if it's the preacher or the lawyer I dislike more in Edwards. But when he talks like that, something makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

              The point is, he is trying to pass himself off as the principled champion of all things liberal who takes strong stands, and speaks out, and shows leadership...but as soon as the issue gets politically dicey, he punts to the governors.

              The others are representing the kind of measured, responsible leadership that he apparently does not like anymore. I wants strong stands. Bold leadership..blah blah blah.

              Of course, thats only for things that are popular today. I have no doubt that he will be a strong, principled leader when gay rights is popular.

    ......who can knock ol' Pajamas Pete out of his Senate seat.  And no matter how much you think is wrong with Richardson, he'd be a great improvement over Domenici.  For that reason, let's not flog him to death.  For better or worse, it would be best for him to emerge as an unsuccessful presidential candidate with a viable political career ahead.

    He's not bad on a lot of policy positions.  Were he to join the Senate tomorrow, he'd walk in the door as one of the most knowledgable in the country on tribal matters.  And he'd be pretty damned good on alternative energy, too.  I could go on, but I'm sure you get my drift.

  It's not like he's some great political character who just can't get his act together - he has no act. Check out his record in New Mexico and you'll see he's damaged that state by  cutting taxes for the rich, running government like a Mafia Don ( many people are starting to talk here about how deep and long lasting the damage will be), and totally pandering to the big nuke corporations like Bechtel. When Timmy asked him about his board position with Valero Energy ( largest refinery in USA), he left out the ten other petroluem companies on whose boards Richardson sat (sits). Richardson has been running for President ever since he was elected Governor. He just got cockfighting banned  a few months ago for christ sake, and he says he can get universal coverage for all Americans in his first year!? He's been worse than his Republican predecessor as Governor. His real decline began when he left congress to eventually head the DOE. His record there was abysmal. He does not deserve the positive projections of any progressive democrats imho.

    Richardson is a sleeze that is adept at great messaging. He runs on his resume but does not include his lobbying businesses especially his stint as managing director of Kissinger McLarty. Yes, That Kissinger, Henry; the one that's been advising Cheney and Bush that the only exit strategy is victory.

    Richardson's anti-war message proposes removing the troops by the end of 2007 but his term, if he were elected/appointed to anything would not start until 2009. So he is saying clean it up for me, and making no assurances about what HE would do. This is more dishonest than R Nixon who ran in 1968 with a "secret plan to end the war." You know how well that worked.

    The cock fighting ban was deliberately ignored until after the 2006 election lest it cost him some votes. He was working his boys to roll up the biggest total ever.  However, quiet ole Senator, Jeff Bingamin,  got 71% on about one third the money with a real opponent.

  my mother-in-law is visiting from Australia, and knows next to nothing about the various democratic candidates, but she is very politically involved at home.

  We were watching the debate and she pointed to Richardson asking us who he was because "He actually sounds like he knows what he is talking about."  

  And so I paid a bit more attention after that (seeing as I am patiently waiting for Gore), and it struck me that although I may not have always agreed with him, his answers were quite detailed.  Compared to Obama say, whose answers always sound good because damn - he has a marvellous voice - but were very general and vague, but with a lot of good, inspirational buzzwords.  

  Maybe if I pay even more attention, I will understand why Richardson sucks.  Right now, I think his biggest problem is his similarity to a teddy-bear.  We always seem to need our presidential candidates to be good-looking or rugged.

    If you looked at a transcript you'd see that often there is no there there. He talks all around a question and sometimes takes both sides in the same question.  Like: he 's for the Red Sox - - - - and really likes the Yankees a lot.

  •  Frankly he probably knows more about

    foriegn policy, and has proven it with successes, than most of the candidates.  I think that Biden knows a lot too.  Compared to Obama, Edwards, and most of the others I would take Richardson any day.  I leave out Clinton, because I think because of her previous white house experience and of course what must have been many discussions with Bill, she probably knows quite a bit.  The rest are want to bes.
