I'm sure many of you are aware of this at this moment, but Kevin Drum (Calpundit) has been working very hard on the Bush/Texas Air National Guard story, and he has requested some help.
Apparently, there are some glaring descrepancies between Bush's pay records and the drill dates of the Alabama unit he was to report to:
http://www.calpundit.com/archives/003234.html
So this is one area of inconsistency. Since one of these drill dates was very close to the election in a political campaign Bush was assissting (within 9 days, I think), Kevin believes its unlike he actually attended on the days he got credit for.
So, to anyone here who lives in Alabama and has some free time on their hands, Kevin asks:
do I have any readers in Alabama who are willing to head to the library and spend a few hours reading through microfilms of local papers to see if they can find any mention of Bush that weekend? The newspaper dates to look for are October 29 and 30, 1972, and the most likely cities are Montgomery and (I assume) Birmingham.
The question is this: are there any news reports indicating that Bush was actually working on Blount's campaign on those days rather than attending drills? If anybody finds anything, let me know
We have any Alabamans here that can help out the cause?
