the infamous "they"

Wasn’t it all supposed to be alright?
Didn’t they tell us to just hold tight?
They said they’d fix it, didn’t they?
They said it’d be okay.
Then why doesn’t today
Feel better than yesterday?
Is it because they lied?
Because the boys died?
They don’t seem to notice.
They see progress,
Towards an unattainable goal.
They see terror as the foe,
So,
Why do they make us afraid?
Why do they continue to wade
In the Tigris?
Don’t they see this?
What do they see?
Do they see me?
And others like me?
Wanting it to end?

See what I see.
Someday,
The infamous they
Will see it too.

•  Who are "they"?

  When I was much younger, my mother was fond of starting a sentence with, "They say ..." this or that. I often asked her, Who are "they"? She would always answer, "the experts."

  Unfortunately, I have to think "they" (the experts) are so full of themselves, "they" will not see it too any time soon.
