Who wants to go FREE to Wrigley Field Wed. night?

OK.  So you're going to YearlyKos.  Chicago.  Chicago.  My kind of town.

And you're a baseball fan.

Boy, do I have a deal for you.

I've got 6 tickets to the Cubbies v. the Phillies on Wednesday evening 8/1/07 at 7:05 pm.  3 of them are in Section 228 (behind homeplate along the 1st base line) and 3 are in Section 211 (behind 3rd base).  One ticket in Section 228 is for me...and the other 5 are up for grabs...for FREE (Value $34 each...more from Scalpers).  OK OK if you want to buy me a beer or two at the game, I won't turn that down.

How to WIN tickets detailed below the fold.

My folks weren't fans, so we didn't make it down to Michigan and Trumble much, but I certainly did when I was an adult.

      Won a batting title and was a hell of a clutch hitter with the Cubs. I seem to remember him being a heck of a defensive first baseman too. He did finish pretty close to 3,000 hits to. Everybody knew Buckners knees were shot at the end of his career but he could still hit, maybe he should have been the DH in that game!!!

      Anyway, no offense but I had to defend Billy Buck. He was another of may favorites growing up!!

  I'm cribbing at a friend's place at Ashland and Addison starting Wednesday night for my Yearly Kos trip.  This means I'll have to be sure to get a neighborhood parking pass, as it's residents only around there when there is a night game.

  Way cool idea.  If I didn't spend so many days each year in the 20 or so years I lived in Wrigleyville going to Cubs games, I'd try a rant.  Better to let others have a chance to see a game at the best ballpark in the country.

•  I struck out Pete Rose at Wrigley Field!

  I was 7 years old, and my Dad took me to Wrigley Field to see the Cubbies play against Cinncinnati. Pete Rose was HOT, and when he came up to bat, the crowd got really quiet.

  In my childish manner, I started chanting "HEY BATTER HEY BATTER HEY BATTER---SWING!

  He swung, and he missed.

  The pitcher got ready, Rose got ready.

  I started again (that summer, I was really into this, found it endlessly entertaining to chant when we watched games on TV): "HEY BATTER HEY BATTER HEY BATTER---SWING!

  Jack Brickhouse noted himself: "Swing and a miss, strike TWOOOO!!!"

  Pitcher winds up, Pete Rose gets ready. There's the pitch! And there I am in all my 7-year-old giggling glory, really loudly: "HEY BATTER HEY BATTER HEY BATTER---SWING!

  Rose swung. He missed. He struck out.

  One of my very best baseball memories ever, and my Dad bought me a Smokey Link from the traveling Smokey Link guy as a reward, for having struck out the great Pete Rose. My Dad loved to tell that story to the end of his days.

  And that is why you should award me a ticket.

  (PS: The Smokey Link guy is no more, but I will gladly buy you beer or another refreshment of your choice if you do the wise and compassionate thing, and award me a ticket...)

  Ron Santo is a Hall of Famer!!!! It is about 7 hrs from here, and I have made it up there for several games at Wrigley, but I won't be able to go that soon. My dad has been a Cubs fan since the 40s and I have been my life too.

  Boy that series there is huge!! The series with the Phils and the series with the Mets are just monster to the Cubs chances. If they win both those series, I think they are definately legit. The Phils and Mets are both pretty good this year.

  I love Chicago and Wrigley and Old Style beer in Wrigley, and the Ivy and of course the Cubs!! If the Red Sox and White Sox can win a series, this may be our year!! Go Cubbies!!!

  I want a Wrigley Field hot dog.  Baseball games are the only time I eat hot dogs, and while in Chi-town, better make it the real deal!  I'll have to adjust my colloquial ear, though, since I'm used to Fenway Park dogs:  Haht dahgs!  Get your haht dags heah!

    I heard that the guy who wrote that song died sometime in the early '80s, and had his ashes spread in the ivy at Wrigley Field. No idea if that is true or not, but it sure is a nice story, as I grew up singing that song at Wrigley with my Dad. I even liked it better than "Take Me Out To The Ballgame", which, of course, is a great anthem in its own right.

  I just changed my hotel reservations to arrive on Wednesday.  I'm coming with my 82 year old step father.

  Watching the Cubs win today reminded me to look and see if there were any seats available.  I bought two tickets in the upper deck.

  The last time we were at Wrigley was the famous Sandberg game when Rino hit two home runs, one in the 9th and one in the 11th, to tie the Cards.

  When I last lived in Chicago, in the 1970s and early 80s, I would bicycle down Clark from Rogers Park and see them.  Several times I sat next to Bill Veeck several times in the center field bleachers.

  Being a Cub fan reminds you about the nature of life:  spring is a time of hope -- there is promise as now in late summer -- and then comes September and things begin to die and all things, like the hope of a Cub post season, comes to an end.  

  Being a Cub fan keeps you in touch with the fact that end the end we all die.

    I'll nominate you & your stepdad as prize winners for 2 of these seats on the assumption that they sound better than the upper deck(?)  Bringing an 82-year old to the park deserves some mojo and you can always give your other tickets away, right?

    My allegiance is to the perpetual losers in the other league, the Red Sox, but since their win in 2004 I've also been rooting for the Cubbies. Everyone should have that experience once in their life. My mom died at age 82 and missed it by a year.

    A great memory was bringing her to a game for Mother's Day a few years prior to that, when she had been dealing with severe arthitis for years and couldn't get out much.  We could only buy lousy seats up in the grandstand.

    But on the day of the game, we followed a tip and asked at the season ticket window if any seats had opened up.  They gave us 4 seats right behind the Sox on-deck circle, about 6 rows in. Incredible. Even gave us a wheelchair for Mom.

    It was a wonderful day, the Sox won, and Mom kept saying: "I'd never thought I'd be able to come here again".

    or me, I would want you to go with him and enjoy having really nice seats.

    I took my Dad to a Cubs game a few months before he died, and as we were climbing the few steps up to get in he had tears in his eyes and said, "I didn't think I would ever have a chance to go to Wrigley Field again." That particular day, he had such difficulty getting up those few steps--and I was remembering earlier days, when keeping up with him through the crowds was definitely a challenge. Now here he was, straining with a cane and the railing, but so excited about a day at the ballgame.

    The Cubbies won that day, and won handily.

    I'll never forget that last Cubs game with him, it meant so much to him and meant so much to me to share it with him.

      My stepfather is my mother's third husband.  She divorced the first two and finally got it right.  

      My mother had voted for Richard Nixon three times for President.  He showed her the error in that.

      I hope we can meet.  Apparently people remember me.  Look for a heavy set white guy in his late 50s with curly (I hope) white hair.

  I didn't see this diary until now.

  I'm a huge Cub fan and will be looking for a ticket for the Wednesday night game.  The only reason I didn't buy a ticket already is that the tickets left on the Cubs site aren't that great, so I'm going to try outside the stadium.

  My grandpa grew up in South Dakota.  He started rooting for the Cubs (the closest team), and his brother rooted for the Yankees (grrr).  My dad picked it up from him, and so on.

  I'll skip the part about being a tortured lifelong Cub fan, because everyone on this thread probably has those same experiences.  So...

  Most memorable trip to Wrigley : At the beginning of the 1998 season, I planned a September trip to Wrigley and got bleacher seats for those games.  I ended up being at the game where Sammy Sosa hit his 61st and 62nd home runs.  Even with everything that's gone on since then, it was a truly amazing moment.

  Most recent trip to Wrigley : June 2007.  I live in Seattle and have Mariners season tickets, so I was really excited to go to Chicago for the Cubs/Mariners series.  I annoyed my Seattle friends by wearing my Cubs hat the whole time.  We were in the front row of the RF bleachers for all three games...a great time.

  Did I mention that I have a piece of ivy from the Wrigley RF bleachers in my wallet?

  Anyway, even if I'm too late to scam a free ticket out of this deal, I'd love to meet up for a beer or something with anyone else going to the game...who's in?  My plane arrives around 3pm on Wednesday, so after going to the hotel and checking in, I probably won't get to the game until close to gametime.  I was thinking about going to the Gingerman after the game.  Anyone interested?
