Don't bother investigating the political affiliations of the guy at the center of the drivers' license scandal, the role of the governor in selecting the failed welfare computer system or the women's prison scandal, but get on this guy who is buying expensive pens--that's the Colorado Media for you. News4 has found that Commerce City city manager Perry VanDeventer has spent $1300 on expensive pens over the last 8 months.
John Salazar is back from Iraq. These two soldiers from Fort Carson won't be coming back: Staff Sgt. Thor H. Ingraham, 24, and Pfc. Nicolas E. Messmer were killed by a roadside bomb yesterday. Prayers go out to their families.
Unbelievably, John Salazar won his battle with BLM over the sale of
mineral rights. BLM decided to put off the sale of some parcels until surface owners
could be notified. Salazar says it's not enough, and is going to keep after BLM.
They are looking for extras for "Catch and Release," a movie to be filmed in Boulder this summer. Don't hold your breathe, however, word is that Ben Affleck knocked up the star, Jennifer Garner, and since she is to play a widow, I'm thinkin' the pregnant thing don't work.
I wonder if she'll breast feed?
Boulder is planning a community cleanup day on Saturday. Hundreds of volunteers will pick up trash and plant flowers. If you are interested in helping contact the Boulder Community Improvement Association. The cleanup day was developed because of budget cuts to the city budget--who needs government anyway?
Yet this government
never of itself furthered any enterprise, but by the alacrity with which
it got out of its way. It does not keep the country free. It
does not settle the West. It does not educate. The character inherent
in the American people has done all that has been accomplished; and it
would have done somewhat more, if the government had not sometimes got
in its way. H.D. Thoreau
Alamosa is having a cleanup day too.
Taking water away from mountain streams may actually help Colorado's state fish--the cutthroat trout.
The lower parts of the Fryingpan River have been taken over by non-native brown and rainbow trout, lowering the water flow could help preserve the cutthroat.
Denver water announced watering restrictions yesterday and they aren't as bad as many feared. However, users have been so good at conserving water that rates may have to increase. Meanwhile, Steamboat has come to an agreement with most opponents of recreational use water rights.
Fort Collins is doing away with tiered water rates as well.
Congratulations to Joseph Garcia. The
State Student Advisory Council (SSAC) selected Pikes Peak Community College
President as President of the Year.
Tom Tancredo has blamed city officials for the death of a Denver police officer, claiming that the officer's death is the result of the city's policy of looking the other way on immigration violations. Donald Young, a detective, was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant. It's really Tom Tancredo's fault for hiring illegals to repair his home.
The transportation corridor in Boulder is popping! With a new train depot in the works (and another planned in Louisville that would generate a major rejuvenation of their downtown. Broomfield is even planning a 6000 seat event center.
After 9/11 the Governor proposed a communications system that would allow police, fire protection, FEMA and medical personal to easily communicate with one another. Three and a half years later, it's still not in place. Worst. Governor. Ever.
"He's a lousy husband, too, but he's the only one I've got."
Ken Salazar is thinking about supporting Bush nominees if the Republicans don't change the filibuster rule. Ken, stopping the nominees is the REASON Democrats want to filibuster. If you are going to vote them in, the filibuster is kind of irrelevant.
An anonymous donor gave $4.5 million to the town of Limon, on the eastern plains, to buy fire and police equipment and improve recreation facilities.
Westword has an expose on the Colorado Women's prison scandal and what should have been done to avert it.
United is a mess, but Frontier is the little airline that could. They are adding more flights.
Good News...Bad News...Longmont's new Walmart will put the old Walmart out of business. The Times Call takes an unbiased look at the retailer:
Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer, and is overwhelmingly popular among bargain-hunting shoppers.
Now that's great reporting. Pulitzer prize winning stuff.
