There are several important bills pending in Sacramento. The first two are good bills requiring pharmacists to fill lawful prescriptions, and the other is a dangerous "voter reform" (aka intimidation) measure.
The pharmacist bills are SB 644, by Sen. Deborah Ortiz (D-Sacramento), and AB 21, by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys). These bills are in direct response to the bills in other states allowing pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions they find morally objectionable. You can read more about it
here (reg. required, sorry). These bills need support and I hope Californians will contact their legislators accordingly.
The so-called voting reform measure smacks of dangerous voter intimidation tactics. Authored by Assemblyman Mark Wyland, R-Del Mar, AB 934 would require proof of citizenship to register to vote, and would also require every voter to present identification on election day. Read more here.
The latter provision would wreak havoc with absentee ballotting and have a disproportionate effect on the elderly and disabled. The registration provisions would discourage young people in particular from registering -- I don't know about you, but my mother didn't have a certified copy of my birth certificate (only the pretty one) and I had to order it from the county registrar before I applied for a passport. How many 18 year olds are going to go to that much trouble? Contact your legislators and encourage them to vote against this measure.
