Not married? No sex for you!

As a public service announcement, 4parents.gov, instructs parents to tell their children to wait until they are married to have sex. That would be the Bathroom Blowjob Party using our tax dollars to  tell us what to tell our children about sex.

The Parents Speak Up National Campaign has produced "Talk To Me." This public service announcement encourages parents to talk with their kids about waiting to have sex. Click on the image below to see the PSA.

If your son or daughter is gay, no need to worry because the Bathroom Blowjob Party provides advice for that situation.

While I do not promote promiscuity, I realize that trying to force your teens and young adults to wait until marriage to have sex is unrealistic.  YOU didn't wait and statistics prove that!  In addition, people who are considering marriage should try to know as much as possible about each other.  If you try to force young people to wait until they are married you set them up for a few disastrous possibilities.

1. With their hormones raging they get married so it will be OK to have sex.
2. They fail to know enough about the person they are marrying and end up with Senator Larry Criag or Senator Ted Haggard, etc.
3. They substitute other, high-risk behavior

    Studies have shown that the "talk to your kids" anti-smoking ads are actually counter-productive.  Teens tend to trust each other, but not adults - so these ads have been found to influence teens to smoke.

    You have to wonder if that won't also happen with this anti-sex approach as well.  Abstinence only programs have proven to be failures where ever they are tried.  It just leads to unsafe sex.  Just what the faux moralists wanted.  

    We desperately need pragmatic policies based in reality not fantasy.

      smoking ads (a lot of them, at least) are funded by Big Tobacco itself, so they make the kids who are saying it's not cool to smoke look like losers on purpose.

      And the recent Ad Council and other ads against marijuana...while I believe in the right of others to partake, the hardest drug I've ever done is caffeine, and those ads are so terrible they make me want to buy some weed just to spite them.  The talking dog one makes no sense, and the ones with the cartoons and the high-pitched music are very annoying.

      I'm sure you didn't mean to paint with such a broad brush. Talking to your kids is important and the article you cite doesn't prove the contrary. One of its points is that the ads, designed for the parents, turned kids off.

      I've always talked to my daughter about sex. She knows she's too young to be having sex (14) even though some of her peers have. She hasn't because, through talking with me, she knows the facts and the potential consequences.

      Talking with your kids doesn't backfire. Setting up unrealistic goals for your kid might, but I'll bet my last dollar that my daughter trusts my word on sex precisely because of our open dialogue about it.

        with my two daughters.  I'll be in my mid-fifties by the time the oldest becomes a teenager (by virtue of having given birth in May 06 and May 07 respectively, at 42 and 43) so I will have to really concern myself with the age/generation gap.  The key to that will be starting early and keeping all discussion realistic and bullshit-free.

        You are right, VetGrl - I certainly was being too expansive because I think it is very important to talk to our kids.  I think the difference is when you are being honest and respectful of children, you try to provide good and accurate information and help them learn to make good decisions for themselves.   Too many of the abstinence only side believe that you can provide lies to scare kids straight (condoms break, pills don't work, etc) and not give them accurate information that they can use to talk things out honestly.

        someone else was right that the "talk to your kids" ad was created by the Tobacco Industry and in some ways designed to completely turn off kids that didn't want to appear uncool.

            It was pretty stressful for a few years after I came out to them.  We didn't speak at all for a year.  My partner and I had been together for 10 years by the time we actually said the words "I'm a lesbian" out loud to them.  I actually thought they already knew.  As a practical matter they did.  They still freaked.

            We visit them now, they visit us.  They've really changed their attitudes.  Even my grandmother is supportive.

            Having the first grandchild helped.  ;-)

        When I came out at 13, my Dad took me to PFLAG meetings and my Mom rushed to find me a psychologist to make sure I was OK being a gay teen in suburban NJ. Both helped me deal with the stressful experience of being a gay kid in the 90s. PFLAG, in particular,helped me as much as my Dad in introducing us to other families with gay members. Its a really great organization.
        In summary, I have really awesome parents.

            Many teenagers said that with the limits on teaching, and with parents who are uncomfortable discussing sex in detail, they learn much of what they know from experience. Some young women here, under the mistaken belief that they can get pregnant through oral sex, refer to their children as "spit babies."

            My niece has two children from her teens now, the first one being the so-called virgin birth spit baby. She didn't bother hiding the reason for the second one since she was living with the guy.  Helluva way to learn about sex ed. I feel for her and her babies (my grand niece and grand nephew), but she's truly a product of Texas' abstinence only system of sex education and her parents' fear of dealing with reality.
