GoreWatch: What's Al up to? Updates.

Sat Sep 08, 2007 at 06:18:41 PM PDT

There hasn't been much Gore news tonight so I thought I'd post a Gore diary to keep the blood flowing. Because I'm not writing GoreWatch diaries as much, when I do, they've guite a bit new information. Here are the latest movements on Al Gore's upcoming schedule:

  1. Al's Australia trip has a minor schedule trip but it's possible the trip can still be called off. Relations with Australian Prime Minister John Howard are not rosy.
  1. Al had cancelled and turned down invitations to ALL international events on his schedule until a recent announcement that he will make a keynote speech at "the first ever Environmental Conference hosted by the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands" in mid-November. An event in Israel is also planned for November though details have been scarce. Not encouraging news but events can be cancelled.
  1. As I suggested a few weeks back, Al continues to fill out his schedule in late September, early October with more trips around western states.
  1. Al Gore may appear at the Primetime Emmy Awards. Eh.

The most comprehensive Al Gore calendar on the internets and more pro-Gore blabber below the fold...

Here is Al's calendar. All events are referenced less one Barbara Boxer fundraiser which I got from a very detailed comment in a previous diary. Source anyone?

September 16 – Rumored event (Los Angeles, CA)

"Now, I hear Gore is expected to be at the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 16. He has good reason to attend. Current TV, the cable television network Gore launched with business man Joel Hyatt about two years ago, is up for an Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Television Emmy." Grain-of-saltville on this one, folks.

Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles

September 19 – Scheduled event (Sydney, Australia)

"THOSE leading environmentalists John Howard and Malcolm Turnbull apparently both turned down invitations to a lunch with An Inconvenient Truth Oscar winner Al Gore in Sydney on Friday week because they had previous engagements. Now Gore's timetable has changed and his Sydney appearance has been rescheduled for September 19. Both the PM and Turnbull have had invitations reissued and the Japanese automobile maker sponsoring Gore's trip has even offered to send chauffeured cars to pick them up, but, as yet, the lunch organisers have not had a reply from either man."

September 29 – Scheduled event (Vancouver, BC)

September 29 – Scheduled event (Victoria, BC)

Speaking arrangement at the Victoria Conference Centre.

"The tour did not include Victoria initially, though Gore is scheduled to appear in Vancouver Sept. 29. He will now do the Victoria stop earlier in the day before heading across the water for his evening engagement.
Jacobson managed to land Gore after he hit the Internet and tracked down Gore's agent to feel him out about a possible Victoria visit."

September - Declined event (Colombia)
"Officials in Bogota said Gore also called off a planned September visit to Colombia, Washington's closest ally in Latin America."

http://findarticles.com/...

September - Cancelled event (Taiwan)
"Former US vice president Al Gore will not be able to make it to Taiwan this September to address the issue of global warming, Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Tien Chiu-chin (田秋堇) said yesterday. Tien, who invited Gore to visit Taiwan to promote awareness on global warming, told reporters yesterday that she received an e-mail from the Harry Walker Agency, which has the exclusive right to arrange Gore's speeches, saying that Gore had canceled all his scheduled events in the next six months. The visit to Taiwan had been postponed to next year, she added. Tien said the reason for the cancelation was that Gore was considering a presidential bid." Take this with a big fat grain of salt. Gore's schedule was obviously not cleared for six months.

November – Unscheduled event (Israel)

The Hebrew version is to be published by Ziblin Youth Communications.”

January 22 – Scheduled event (Gothenburg, Sweden)

On January 22, 2008, Gore will go to Gothenburg to receive the award at the city's public Save the Climate Event. "This will be an unforgettable evening with prominent artists - and with a speech by the most important opinion maker today on Planet Earth," Edman said.

http://www.ens-newswire.com/...

January – ABC Debate
Democratic primary debate yet to be scheduled for “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”.

Aside from this Turks and Caicos event, Al Gore is still mostly open after the Nobel Peace Prize announcement. We can't say that it's because he's 'cleared his schedule' and especially not that he's running for President. Perhaps he just doesn't book (or announce) events more than a month event. The next couple of weeks will be telling.

Primary and Caucus Deadlines

I have had a terrible time finding the signature/registration deadlines for the Democratic primaries and caucuses. I've only got 3 dates up there. I only trust one and that's unsourced info from a diary comment a week or two ago.

If you are working on a Draft Gore movement in your state and/or are gathering signatures for Al Gore in your state, PLEASE let me know what your deadline is. There are Al Gore's REAL deadlines and help inform the calendar.

Thanks again to all who have offered dates and corrections.

Vanity Fair: Take Two

I'd like to stop now to pose a quick question about the media coverage of Al Gore that has started back up this week. Do you think Al Gore's friendship to the Peretz family could give him influence over the publication of the Vanity Fair article the day after Labor Day?

I don't know much about Marty Peretz or his daughter Evgenia, the author of the Vanity Fair article. But here is what I've found online:

Martin Peretz is a long-time friend of Al Gore. He is Editor-in-Chief of the New Republic and along with a couple pro-Gore articles in his publication, he is a self-confessed Gore Flak. His daughter, Evgenia, then prepares a story on how the media slighted Al Gore in 2000... on the first day of the political season. Perhaps its a coincidence.

I'm suspicious of coincidences in politics.

PS - This diary is safe for folks who just want to scream AL GORE IS AWESOME on a lazy Saturday night.

  •  No clue whether he'll get in or not... (13+ / 0-)

But Al Gore is awesome, and I'd love to see him jump in.  I suppose that if he does, it wouldn't be until after the Nobel announcement.

  •  Run Al, Run.... (9+ / 0-)

I feel much the same way.  I scour tons of sites looking for inklings, but aside from the loyal Gore fans here, there's not much new to read.

I personally think he is going to announce after the Nobel.  I think he really wants it, and if he announces beforehand, he's likely to lose their consideration since the event is often apolitical.

I think if the Nobel announcement comes and goes, and we hear nothing within 2 weeks of that day, then our hopes for a Gore run might be lost.

Run Al, Run......  It's such a slam dunk for you now.  If you doesn't get in this cycle, we are unlikely to see you in the white house (ever, unfortunately).....There is too much at stake not to throw yourself back in the arena.

    Please Al, Please Run.......

  •  calendar (10+ / 0-)

If he plans on keeping things super-duper top secret, i wouldn't put much stock in the calendar.  None of these appearances (besides the Nobel) would preclude him from running, and the minute he announced, they'd all obviously be cancelled.

I think he's been hanging around with Steve Jobs and has learned a thing or two about product roll-out.

I think maybe 2-4 weeks beforehand there will be some carefully orchestrated leaks, then a few days before, an announcement of a major speak to be given in Carthage, and then, he'll announce.

    I don't think we'll see a Thompson-esque roll-out culminating in a Leno appearance.

I think it will be a grand, eloquent speech, followed by a media tour, then hard core fundraising.....

Gore Endorsement -- Potent but Not Foolproof

By Chris Cillizza And Shailagh Murray
    Sunday, September 9, 2007; Page A02

Former vice president Al Gore's pronouncement that he is likely to endorse one of the Democratic candidates for president before the primary season is over has set off a slew of speculation about who his choice might be.

Truth is, the courting of the "Goreacle" began many months ago. Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) and Gore huddled in Nashville in December, and Gore has also met with former senator John Edwards (N.C.). Gore and Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (Conn.) conferred as recently as last week.

Not surprisingly, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) has not met with Gore. Neither has Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (Del.) nor New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.

The falling out between Gore and the Clintons has become the stuff of political legend. Then-Vice President Gore's decision to distance himself from Bill Clinton in the 2000 presidential campaign did not sit well with the Clintons, who resented that Gore was willing to accept credit for the administration's achievements while at the same time criticizing the president's personal conduct.

It seems safe to predict that Gore will not be endorsing the bid of the senator from New York. A more open question might be whether he would throw his support to Obama -- the only candidate in the top-tier who, like Gore, opposed the war in Iraq from the start -- or another surging contender at a critical moment to try to derail Hillary Clinton's quest for the nomination.

The other candidates would do almost anything for Gore's support. Dodd's campaign was quick to note that Gore likes Dodd's proposal for a corporate carbon tax and that the senator called the former veep last week to thank him for supporting the idea. Asked about Gore, Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz gushed: "Senator Edwards has the deepest respect and admiration for Vice President Gore. He is a true leader whose prescient work in raising the issue of global warming has literally mobilized millions of Americans and the world to act."

Gore is, without question, the biggest "get" when it comes to the fight for endorsements on the Democratic side. Since his loss to George W. Bush, Gore has been transformed from a has-been politician to a happening global messenger on the dangers of climate change.

So popular has Gore grown that many within the grass roots of the party have urged him to make another bid for the White House, a prospect for which he continues to express little interest.

And why would he run again? In addition to having an elevated status on the world stage, Gore has done extremely well for himself in the private sector (he sits on the board of Apple and is an adviser to Google) and now has a chance to play kingmaker in the 2008 presidential sweepstakes.

Though Gore's endorsement would be powerful, it wouldn't be foolproof. In 2004, he threw in his lot with former Vermont governor Howard Dean about a month before Dean crashed and burned in Iowa.

I pray this is just typical Cilizza BS.

Foo, these speculating reporters and the Important People they talk to don't know anymore than we do.

I do think if he announces, it will be before the Nobels - can you imagine Al Gore allowing statements that he's just taking advantage of the award?

I am getting impatient - he needs to get in the race, and help focus and put spine into the Iraq funding votes.

If we don't get out of Iraq and repair the damage to our military and international relations, how can we get started in the right direction on all the interconnected global change issues?

A four-year presidential term flies by, and forces always work to bog you down.  Bush and the Repubs WANT Iraq to wreck the seeming inevitable Democratic presidency.  Bush so he won't look so bad, and the Repubs so they can take over in 2012.

Gore:  "Well Meredith, I said all along that I never intended to be a candidate again, but after watching what is happening to this country that I love so dearly, I felt I had to act."
Viera: "So are we really going to see the real Al Gore?"
Gore:  "You know, when I decided to do this, the decision came after sitting down with Tipper and my family, and the one thing we decided was that we weren't going to let our opponents or the media for that matter, decide what we talked about.  This talk about the new me is just silliness.  Now, I know that my time here is limited because we have to go to commercial soon, so I'd really appreciate it if we could focus on the major issues going on in America.  If you'd rather focus on nonsense, I think I'll pass.  We have major issues facing our country, and it's about time the media started paying a little bit more attention.  Americans are dying every day in Iraq, our environment continues to be poisoned, but I am hopeful and optimistic that our great nation has the political will to overcome these challenges.  Now, would you like to talk about them, or should we talk about how much my haircut cost, what kind of shoes I'm wearing, whether or not I sighed a lot today, or if I've lost some weight?"

to play some sort of schoolyard game with the American people.

It's a stretch to assume such ulterior motives. Those of us choosing to keep hope alive for a Gore run consider him to be an honorable man, thereby deeming his modus operandi or any variation thereof, the same.

Mr. Gore is most assuredly agonizing over this decision. At this pivotal point in American history, I know if it was me, it would be a decision requiring great deliberation - no matter what my chances were of winning.

No, we can't wait forever for Mr. Gore to make this most important decision.

But, speaking only for myself, I will defer to the honorable Mr. Gore's incertitude for as long as it is pragmatic for me to do so.

You've seen the crappy teaser that FoxNews is going to bust VP Gore for flying on a private jet.

If VP Gore does decide to run again then he will have to charter one as flying commercial just wouldn't work. You guys know how campaigns work, sometimes you just fly to the city's airport and make a statement so it will be on the local evening news.

There is a certain bunch of people who will call VP Gore a hypocrite unless he moves into a mud hut and rubs himself to keep warm. The press would be all over this and I am afraid it would sidetrack his campaign.

    Put my mind at ease.

    •  My take on it is this (7+ / 0-)

Al Gore is a former Vice President, as well as a former Senator, of the United States of America.  He is not Grizzly Adams.

The wingnuts and opponents who say global warming is not true are framing the issue by making people equate environmentalists with rural men who leave civilization and go live in the wilderness.  This is absolutely not true and is exactly the opposite of what we really need our environmentalists to be.

There are different ways to pursue environmental protection and changes.  Al Gore is on the right track.  Thank goodness.

  •  Something I've Pondered (6+ / 0-)

If Gore isn't running, he also has to know that next year the focus will be on the Presidential race. Global Warming and similar ventures will be on the back burner until people know who the next President is going to be and how the Congress looks. What would he do during that long time?

And what about not making a Shermanesque statement now? Gore is far too considerate to keep people hanging like this, when a simple let-down statement would allow people to focus on other candidates. They could influence the candidates on things such as global warming and ecology and make sure the environment is a major issue.

Which is why I think he will run. Running would keep the attention on the environment and win or lose, shape the next Administration's policy. And I'm sure he would like to help elect sympathetic members of Congress.

Wouldn't this be the time to really engage the netroots regarding these issues? If I were he, I would certainly be engaging the netroots in discussion about these issues. There will be work to do in 2009 and beyond, and hooking up with engaged online activists would go far. He's seen what the netroots have done with Democracy for America and other groups: why not get acquainted before the primary rush?

Who out there would like to start up a Draft Gore New York campaign? I'm trying to find out what the filing deadline is on Monday by calling the NY Elections Board (I can't find the info online).

But I'm ready to put together a NY organization and to start mobilizing for signatures.

Any New Yorkers want to get in on this?

on many issues for the Gore campaign.

Check the Netroots for Gore site or go here and enter your zip code to find local groups.  There are many Gore MeetUps and groups across the nation.

Here's a partial list of the ballot requirements and here's a list from the Reform Institute with all the states and their requirements (it is OLD information though and there have been changes in various states).

Thanks but there's nothing going on through these links. I frequent Netroots for Gore already. There's nothing more than 2-3 small groups in NYC and no clear understanding of what it takes to get on the primary ballot.

        •  Okay, here's a little info (3+ / 0-)

This site has a few states and their requirements listed. Here is 2004 info from New York:

          1.  New York – President

Primary Date: First Tuesday in March.  (N.Y. Elec. Law § 8-100)

Nomination: A Republican candidate will appear on the ballot if he or she is discussed in the national news or qualified for federal matching funds.

Petitions: A Republican candidate may also collect 5,000 signatures if he or she does not meet the above nomination criteria.

A Democratic candidate must collect 15,000 signatures.

          Filing Fees:   None.

Ballot Access.org has a LOT of info on this issue.

Of course, the fastest way to find this info is to go to the Secretary of State's Office in each state. But, a couple of the states had (or will have) some changes.

And, here is a link to the list of the primaries/caucuses around the US and their DATES. Includes a nice map and a breakdown and everything.

  •  I'm keeping the lights on for Al (5+ / 0-)

Until he makes a Shermanesque statement, I'm holding out.  If he really doesn't run, I'm starting to think I'll go with whoever he endorses -- his opinion means that much to me.

In Michigan, I don't know the deadline, but I do know that all we need is the candidate's signature saying he/she is a candidate in order for them to get on the ballot.  No petitions, no money.  So easy, yet so hard.  Come on, Al, just sign that piece of paper for us!
