This has not been a good year for the Justice Dept. (then again when you have a government headed by such a lame brain as Chimpy McDoodypants you can rest assured it has not been a good year for the entire US population).
In addition to all the political problems at Justice, you would think the FBI (a part of the Justice Dept) would try and lay low (instead of spying on Americans illegally) and do some REAL work (like fighting all the corruption that has become endemic in the country).
But no....
PORTLAND, Ore. - The FBI is making a new stab at identifying mysterious skyjacker Dan Cooper, who bailed out of an airliner in 1971 and vanished, releasing new details that it hopes will jog someone's memory. The man calling himself Dan Cooper, also known as D.B. Cooper, boarded a Northwest flight in Portland for a flight to Seattle on the night of Nov, 24, 1971, and commandeered the plane, claiming he had dynamite.

Yes D.B. Cooper is back on the radar, so to speak. One would think after 36 years they would pack it in already. It is not like Cooper is Kennedy (yes we have not really solved that one yet, tho the FBI could hire the crack Pakistani ISI to solve it since they solved the Bhutto murder in one day!) or even Hoffa (well that one is only 32 years old - and the FBI hasn't persuaded the Mara family to tear down Giants Stadium yet).
The Cooper story is more 'fun' than it is important. It is the stuff of urban legend (many people have come forward claiming they were Cooper), movies (The Pursuit of DB Cooper with Robert Duvall) and speculation. Not anything I would call ALL that earth shattering -- or worth spending more money (that the US goverment doesnt have).
But I guess if we can spend $720 million a day in Iraq (money John McCain is calling well-spent and that he can 'find' but cutting 'fat' in the govt), what is a few Benjamins on a long-lost parachute jumper? Kids without insurance? - HAH - if we can find this urban legend among the forests of Oregon, just think we can possibly get a double whammy in headlines -- Britney off the masthead for 10 minutes, and perhaps even a cure for diabetes hidden in his knapsack!
Dodge and weave from reality - that is the mantra of our government. And a lot of America will just eat it up. I hope the FBI can recoup this 'investment' by selling the movie rights.
But who am I to argue with the FBI? If GHWB can jump out of a plane at 80, finding DB Cooper must be something that needs to have closure. Excuse me, I have a plane to catch.
