MSNBC is reporting that young voter turn out is tremendous this year, which is fantastic for the Democratic party in general, but is turning out to be a huge advantage for Barack Obama.
"Change over experience" seems to be the phrase of the night. When I wrote a diary on 12/22/07 about my decision to vote for Obama over Hillary in the primaries, I mentioned the stigma that women must vote for the female candidate. I thought that was as silly as supposing white men would vote for a white male candidate, black voters would vote for a black candidate, and all Christians would vote for Huckabee.
I'm heartened by the fact that people are voting for change. But more than anything, as a 25 year old woman, I'm just delighted that so many young women are voting. I have never forgotten how hard American women in the late 19th and early 20th century fought for suffrage, for the right to even cast a vote. This is resonating with young women tonight, and they've turned out in droves. I'm so proud tonight of all of the women casting their votes for any candidate.
This is a far less eloquent diary than I typically post, but I'm watching three cable news networks and C-SPAN simultaneously and they've just called Obama as the winner, so I'm absolutely hyper right now!
