So it begins....
With the 2008 Presidential caucuses and primaries occurring, it remains to be seen which Democratic candidate will win the nomination for the big push forward to the White House. One thing that candidates have found as crucial for success is a good theme song. Bill Clinton was able to use the song "Don’t Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)" by Fleetwood Mac in his first presidential bid to such a degree that he not only won the final race but he was able to do the impossible: reunite the members of Fleetwood Mac to play at his first Inaugural Ball. Pretty heady stuff.
Although most candidates these days seem to think they can do without a song in their hearts--or at least in their campaigns--the fact remains that just the right song can galvanize voters to such a degree that a landslide is almost inevitable. So it had to happen that someone out there is auctioning off the temporary rights to a song which can be used for a Democratic presidential candidate. Yes, this is really happening on ebay, where pretty much any goods or services can be had for the right price.

This listing--"Campaign Theme Song for 2008 Democratic Nominee"--seems like the stuff of parody, but the auctioneer is quite serious about it. It is listed under "Specialty Services - Artistic Services - Music Composition & Poetry" and the description mentions the following stipulations:
I am willing to give the next Democratic nominee for the White House the short-term rights to a song that I wrote which embodies the spirit of change and renewal. The song already exists, and will be part of my upcoming album (to be self-released in a couple of months). This auction is only for those who are legitimate representatives of legitimate Democrats running for the nomination. I will not accept any "winners" who are not affiliated with either the Democratic Party or any of those candidates who are running for the office at this time, and I have the right to refuse any winners of this auction who have no connection to these qualifications listed in this paragraph.
This is a serious offer. This is not a joke or novelty, so only serious bids will be accepted. Thank you.
No word on whether this seller is willing to allow any bids from Ron Paul’s legitimate campaign, though there is a link to a MySpace page just to show that this individual has something real to sell...or at least to rent to the highest bidder. Speaking of which, the bidding starts at $50 with a "Buy It Now" price of $200.
What some people won’t do for money these days.
