We should all be proud of ourselves, because tonight in New Hampshire, the progressive vote of Obama+Edwards+Kucinich constituted about 55% of all votes cast, a clear majority.
But at the same time, we should be very un-proud of our antiquated voting system that caused the non-progressive Clinton to win. If New Hampshire used a sensible voting system like Instant Runoff Voting been in place, I am sure many Edwards supporters would have ranked Edwards first and Obama second, ensuring a big Obama victory. The truth is that tonight Edwards was, mathematically, a "spoiler". I say that as an Edwards supporter, using "spoiler" in the strict voting-theory sense, with no derogatory connotations.
We need to continue the grassroots work that has been so successful in enacting IRV in jurisdictions around the country. Eventually, we will have Instant Runoffs at the national level, but as tonight showed, until that happens, us progressives will continue to be screwed from time to time.
