If I hear another racist attack on immigrants defended on the grounds of "law and order" i'm going to puke. And if i hear it again from someone who calls themselves a progressive... well since i'm non-violent i can't say i'm gonna shoot someone, but they'd sure have it comin'.
Since so many here pretend to have forgotten, let me spell it out: we have not a only a right, but a DUTY to fight against and even break bad laws, especially racist ones. Our heritage as progressives is built upon doing just that.
Anyone who claims we have to stop illegal immigration, or that illegal immigration is a problem, based solely on the fact it is illegal is directly in contradiction with the proud history of the progressive movement.
"But i only favor hurting illegal immigrants, they broke the law."
so did Rosa Parks, ya morons...
The entire Civil Rights Movement was led by those who believed, rightly, that we do not have an obligation to follow unjust laws. Laws that say someone has to let their family go hungry because America doesn't want them here are unjust. Our immigration laws are racist, and often inhuman, as they ask us to let people starve at home or cause them to die in our deserts.
I agree with the idea that we have rights that are "inalienable." We have them because we are humans, not because some lawgiver told us we had them. People who need work have a right to go where work is, we don't "give" them the right to feed their families. Just as workers have a right to organize. Just as women have a right to control their body, they weren't "given" that right by Roe v. Wade. And if Roe v. Wade is overturned, will those people here saying workers from other countries don't have the right to come here because it's illegal also tell women they don't have the right to control their body because it's illegal? Would those same people have told Rosa Parks she should get to the back of the bus? Or told Ghandi that civil disobedience was a bad idea? Or tell union organizers in anti-union states they can't organize?
Hell No!
And that's what makes this law and order line of anti-immigrant bullshit so hypocritical when it comes from those who claim to be progressive. They would never ask themselves or people they care about to follow a law that treats them unjustly, but they claim that workers and others who often NEED to come here have to follow unjust laws that restrict them.
So just to give a few more examples:
it's NOT okay to break the law to feed your family,
but it IS okay to break the law to:
* Have fun! (break the drug laws all you want.)
* Get to the party on time. (traffic laws are so 1950's, no matter the highway death toll.)
* Make your opinion known (it's ok to break laws you feel restrict free speech.)
* Save money on your taxes (no one like the IRS, even me!)
* Get that good camping spot (who cares if the sign says "no overnight stays.")
In short, hypocritical American progressives think it is okay for them to break laws that cause them some minor inconvenience or hinder their fun, but is isn't okay for people to break our immigration laws out of NEED.
anybody else got more examples of laws that these new believers in law and order break while lecturing us & immigrants about not entering the country illegally?
