As the title of this diary states, it would appear that the Los Angeles GOP are banking on Hillary's nomination by the Democrats to run for President. Now, rather than point out what's already been tread upon by others in regards to Karl Rove and other Rethugs, I am going to concentrate on an email I received today (1/18) by the LA GOP (click through at your own peril!).
Follow me past the fold:
Dear Californian,
Our official campaign to begin electing Republican candidates in 2008 begins today.
While most of media [sic] is focused on the Republican presidential primary...blah blah blah....
We need your support right now to prepare these candidates, and help our Republican Presidential nominee defeat Hillary Clinton next November.
Surprised?
I know I shouldn't have been, but I most sincerely was. There's more:
P.S. We have to start NOW to stop Hillary Clinton from taking America down the road to defeatism and socialism. Your contribution in any amount will help us defeat her this year. Please take a moment and help us now by contributing at...
I am no fan of Hillary Clinton, but everything about this email stinks to high heavens of Republican fear-mongering. What's more, there is not a single mention of Barack Obama or - of course - John Edwards.
Since it isn't nearly enough to just focus on the "inevitable specter" of a Hillary Clinton nomination, they also resort to using such words as 'defeatism' and 'socialism' - references to the Democrats' stance against the Iraq War, and our renewed focus on Universal Healthcare.
Rather than make any types of judgments about the hows and whys of this email, I'm preferring to just bring it to everyone's attention. The Republicans will stop at nothing in their near-futile war for the Presidency this year and the more we know of their strategies, the better off we are.
Despite many tangible differences between the Democratic contenders and their supporters, and despite people's opinions on the "dirtiness" of the fight so far; my belief is that the Republicans will only get nastier once both parties choose their candidates - especially given how cash-strapped the GOP will be this election.
My money is that this is only the tip of the Republican fear-and-hate-filled iceberg [insert snappy one-liner about global warming here].
For those who want to know what the entire email says, here goes and hold your breath:
Dear Californian,
Our official campaign to begin electing Republican candidates in 2008 begins today.
While most of media is focused on the Republican presidential primary, our focus has always been around building a strong grassroots organization in the Los Angeles area that is committed to electing Republican candidates at the local, state, and federal level.
Strong grassroots programs are not built overnight and need constant nurturing. We will have over 175 Republican candidates on the ballot next year, and they will all need organizational support in raising funds, increasing awareness, signing-up volunteers, and increasing voter turnout.

We need your support right now to prepare these candidates, and help our Republican Presidential nominee defeat Hillary Clinton next November. Because of the McCain-Feingold federal contributions limitations, small individual donors, like you, are more important than ever before.

I hope you join us and make a contribution today. Even a donation of $25, $50, or $100 will make a difference. Your contribution combined with those from hundreds of other Republicans in California will make the Republican Party a stronger organization in November.
Your donation today will begin sowing the seeds of victory for Republican candidates in 2008 and provide the essential resources to support Republican candidates in your neighborhood.

Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Linda Boyd
Chairman
Republican Party of Los Angeles County
