I've been an Edwards supporter all year long, though I'm not a really rabid type. Meaning I could be persuaded by pretty much any of his rivals for the nomination should he fail and they take up the mantle.
Mostly I've been obsessed with Kumbaya. Wanting folks on our side not to circle the wagons and fire. Hoping the party stayed close enough together to defeat the Evil Regime in the fall.
That all came to an end when Sen. Barack Obama compared himself to Ronald Reagan, and said Bill Clinton wasn't a change agent, like Reagan and Obama.
I don't know who he thinks such a statement is appealing to, but this is one lifelong Democrat who was mightily alienated by it. I never thought there was anything that could keep me from voting for a Democrat for President, but this statement qualifies, if it goes unretracted and he refuses to apologize.
This time it's personal. Ronald Reagan killed 17 of my friends in San Francisco during the years 1985-1992 because he ignored AIDS, he ignored his own advisers' advice about AIDS, he wouldn't speak the word or kick up the funding until his friend Rock Hudson died and he finally awoke to the truth.
I will never vote for anyone who looks favorably upon the legacy of Ronald Reagan.
Do you agree?
