A recommended diary just made it clear to me that my opinions were not in fact welcome here. Unless I am willing to wholeheartedly support the democratic candidate whoever he/she may be I should not bother coming to your party. I’m a bit concerned here I’ve checked my breath and armpits now and can’t seem to get it – Do I offend?
I admit it I’m still a registered republican - though a proud voter for both Gore and Kerry. Perhaps, it was being raised by a minister and a teacher (both die hard democrats) and going through high school admiring Alex P. Keaton. Perhaps it was youthful idealism and believing in Ronald Reagan’s love for the country. I was proud to share a political party with someone who proudly communicated his love of god and country – not to mention smaller government. But a funny thing happened on the way to my forties – I grew up. It’s amazing really the older I get the smarter my parents get – go figure.
I went to college, studied business and economics, spent 14 years working for other people, then started my own business. Ah – the American dream five years slowly building a business to the point where I could afford to pay my employees, sometimes myself, and even cover my medical bills usually since health insurance was out of the question. (since closed as I decided I simply could not risk it with health insurance anymore – sorry about the five jobs lost)
Over that time I have come to a few conclusions. First – republicans don’t really believe in a small government they believe in bloating it so large everyone wants to get rid of it. Second – democrats don’t really believe in a big government it just happens to be a necessary evil in achieving their social goals (many of which I share). Third – Al Gore is the only politician I have ever heard who stressed the importance of making government efficient and work for the people.
That said Gore is not running – don’t blame him, whoever gets the job is going to walk into a right mess. So what do I want in a president? Simple this year I’m a single issue voter. I want a candidate who will push, fight, scream, and veto anything but – a Universal Single Payer Healthcare system.
So why wont I support Hillary over McRomulabee – simple she has a plan to work with the insurance industry to insure more (okay all) Americans. And get this – the insurance companies will just jump at the opportunity to insure everyone after all it’s more premiums and hey they can still deny coverage there’s a killing to be made. Unfortunately I choose not to be killed. The republicans consistently give lip service to the issue but lets face it – they wont do a damn thing.
Hillary might do just enough to push a single payer healthcare system back years – the repubs will keep it going as is which may get enough people pissed off enough to enact change – REAL CHANGE. There is one candidate pushing a single payer system – no one gives him much of a chance – best case he’s a VP candidate (again) and the presidential candidate will listen to him on health care. I give Hillary a lot of credit she makes a plan and sticks to it – but that plan will hurt more than it will help. So I’ll support Tom Allen, and democratic candidates for the house and senate but no I will not cast a vote for Hillary. Laugh, call me names, write me off, - say BYE, but I’m still here another opinion, view, dream, and goal. Maybe we can build a platform together – but we’ll have to have a candidate that supports it.
