Really, this is the final straw that should get our favorite independent stripped of any and all seniority in the Democratic Party. He will be campaigning against the Democratic candidate in the Presidential election in November. I think Joe can say it even better himself.
In a Newsweek interview he is asked about campaigning against a Dem...
(Newsweek) Right now you're campaigning for him against Republicans. Will it become more awkward--or will you feel uncomfortable--if or when you're out there campaigning against a Democrat?
(Lieberman) No. 1, as my late mother would say, I hope I have such a problem--that McCain is the candidate. Look, to be honest, there will be a twinge, occasionally, because if it's Obama or [Hillary] Clinton, I know both of them, and I'm working together with them. But ultimately, I've thought about this, and I know I've selected the person who is best to lead our country in the future, to be commander in chief in a time of war--and to do more than anyone else could to break through the partisan stupidity here in Washington.
The rules are set for this Congress. Absolutely positively nothing that happens now can change the balance of the Senate. No need to spend any chat arguing about it.
So please, can we finally agree to rid ourselves of Lieberman? What does he bring to the Democratic party? Nothing that I can see. And I really do not feel bad in the least about allowing someone else to take over his committee spots. According to his Senate website, here are his current committee assignments.
Senator Lieberman is Chairman and former Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which is responsible for oversight of the Department of Homeland Security and assuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the Federal Government. In addition, he is a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee where he is the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Private Sector and Consumer Solutions to Global Warming and Wildlife Protection; Senate Armed Services Committee, where he is Chairman of the Subcommittee on AirLand Forces and sits on the Personnel and Sea Power Subcommittees; and the Small Business Committee.
I am sure there are a lot of worthy replacements for these committees who would be happy to support the Democratic candidate for President in 2008. Let's find some.
Strip him of his committee assignments. They are for Democrats.
UPDATE: To clarify, I really would like to kick Lieberman to the curb tomorrow. However, I realize that January 2009 is the earliest realistic date. If any Democrats have the cojones.
