One of the worst Presidents in U.S. history, spied on his own citizens, ignored the Constitution, responsible for the death of thousands, instigated the exponential increase in the number of our enemies, and a near-equal precipitous loss in alliances, won re-election in 2004.
Did you get all that? And he won.
Placing the needed discussion on election vote-count concerns in certain states aside for now, let's face a harsh reality:
Mitt McCain will win.
Or rather, the Democratic Party will lose, again.
The Democrats don't know how to assess their situation and focus their efforts wisely. They also don't want to face reality about the worst aspects of the American electorate.
They want to rely on a less-than-honest claim of "35 years of change" that really translates as the same old song and dance, that they hope to disguise as a badge of great achievement.
Or they want you to "trust me" and "let's change the world with Hope like the Great Martin Luther Reagan did", wink, wink.
Meanwhile, a candidate who spent his life fighting for the average person, speaks to the real and urgent needs of the people, follows a sober voting record with a passionate realization of just getting fed up with maintaining the status quo, and has run a surprisingly good first-time campaign 4 just years prior, is somehow treated like a pariah by his own party. (Sound familiar Misters Gore, Dean?) Only this time, they want you to believe it is because he just happens to be the wrong gender and race.
Really though, it's his message. The Democratic party has been chasing the GOP so long that it can no longer even understand any but the most conservative Democrats, and/or how to play the race or gender card, only supposedly in their favor.
I express this cynicism against my wish. It is in fact long overdue for us to have a person other than a white male running the White House. However, it doesn't make much sense to close the barn door after the cows have gone, because you'll just have to go out and open it again when they come home.
At this moment, we have two "minority candidates" trying so hard to be accepted by that all-too-elusive "middle" that they simply are not displaying near the courage in this race that their competitor is.
And the media is in love with the hype, as usual.
Oh well.
How many times can the Dems figure out a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory?
Let's watch and see.
