After all the unimaginable stupidity and petty intra-partisan politics exhibited in the Republican race, after many have predicted the death of the Reagan coalition, the GOP has surprisingly picked the best candidate it had to offer.
Despite strong opposition from republican insiders, Christian conservatives, and Rush Limbaugh, John McCain has clawed his way to the top of the pile. He pulled off an amazing comeback just a few months after his campaign was pronounced dead by the media. The "Maverick" senator who is about to be crowned the GOP frontrunner and who will cement the nomination on Super Tuesday, has pulled off a victory against enormous odds.
The ball is now in the Democrats court. Will it be McCain vs Hillary or McCain vs Obama? My thoughts on both races.
Mccain vs Obama. The Pendulum is swinging towards liberalism, everybody knows it. Nothing can be more symbolic of this than seeing an old white man run against a young charismatic black man. Obamas rhetoric of change and a new beginning will be a perfect contrast to McCains urge to stay the course. Such a race will be less about issues and more about image. When asked to choose between the old and the new, Americans will choose Obama ushering a progressive, and opposed to simply a democrat future.
McCain vs Hillary. A universally hated partisan vs a respected moderate. McCains "Maverick" reputation of taking principled but unpopular stands, and going against his own party will attract independents. Hillary’s conduct in the nomination campaign will cement her image as a soulless politician willing to destroy anything that stays in her way. Republicans and Independents represent an invincible political alliance. Democrats need to attract independents in order to win, Hillary vs McCain is the ideal way to make them go Republican. On the other side of the political spectrum, those that view McCain as a liberal, will be united by their hatred towards Hillary, and vote despite their dislike for McCain.
PS: I am not an Obama supporter; I am a liberal leaning libertarian. I am not affiliated with any political campaign.
