On Martin Luther King day I had this to say about John Edwards:
More than either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama, John Edwards has a populist message that gets to the heart and soul of the Democratic party, also reminiscent of Dr. King.
...And in addition to reminding us why we are all here, John Edwards embodies the changes over the last few years more than anyone else in that he has dramatically shifted from a post-9/11 conservative to progressive populist. And both seem to be the right position for the time.
There are three other things I want to say about John Edwards. First, I wholeheartedly agree with him that there should be more emphasis on post-Katrina New Orleans. The ninth ward should be part of a commercial. There should be pictures of other areas that were rebuilt after hurricanes under Democratic administrations with a note underneath and/or voiceover saying "This is your country under Democratic management. And then the ninth ward after Katrina would have a note or voiceover that says "This is your country under Republican management." And that picture of John McCain hugging W the same day he praised the inept "Brownie."
John Edwards gets how important of a symbol New Orleans and what it represents are. I am mystified that Hillary and Barack do not.
The second thing I want to say about John Edwards is that his stance against corporate America and his refusal to take lobbyist money is closest to that of my friend Eric Massa. A big part of my heart agreed with him when he was preaching this part of his message.
This third thing I want to say is that I have nothing but respect for his emphasis on the poor and his anti-poverty message. I hope Barack and Hillary keep their promise to him today to include that as part of their own campaigns. (link)
