A couple of things about Alabama...
- Ever since Howell Heflin, no Democrat has won a U.S. Senate seat (I don't think anyone has even come close).
- The one Democratic governor elected recently... is now in prison (Yes I know why he's there, and how Karl Rove had a hand in this).
- If there's a quasi-legal way for the powers that be to suppress Democratic and/or minority voters they'll find it.
- A few years ago, Governor Fob (Forrest) James (yes a Republican) asked his staff to work on "modeling the state government on the Waffle House restaurant chain", and actually made the comment that "government ought to be run like a Waffle House".
With regards to Jeff Sessions' seat in the Senate that's up for election:
Is there a chance we'll have a stronger candidate step forward for the Democratic nomination? Sorry, but Vivian Davis-Figures is a sacrificial lamb at best, and a easily mocked cartoon character of a candidate at worst. I don't think anyone wants a Sherri Shepperd clone running for office. I'll spare you the YouTube links; they're there if you want to look at them.
The AL Democratic Party page doesn't offer any insight on any other candidate who might be capable of winning in the "belly of the beast".
Now the hard reality is that Sessions is backed by deeply entrenched and tremendously well-funded interests/operatives. I used to live in Ft. Rucker, Montgomery, and Birmingham; I've seen Alabama Republicans and how they operate. "Rush Hours" are still attended with white religious fervor. "Fair and Balanced", "Dr. Limbaugh" and "EIB" have been integrated into the local lexicon in grotesque ways.
I know it's a tall order, but surely there must be a Democrat out there who can give Jeff Sessions a real fight this November? Maybe get the RNC goons to actually spend time/money in AL?
What's going on over there people?
Greetings from a former AL resident, now in San Fran...
