Last year nearly all of my friends got caught up in the "secret" helping drive the book to the number 1 position on the best seller list.. I wonder if Obama is the political version of the same phenomenon?
everyone would like to believe that there is a solution to their suffering — better yet, a solution that requires you only to think to receive it. The truth is that positive thinking (part of what The Secret promotes) is a valuable tool and has been known about and written about for well over a century but there is no evidence to back up the idea that thoughts alone can change the future.
In Politics is it enough to just hope for change in order to bring it about??
Oprah loves the "Secret" almost as much as she loves Obama. Wouldn't it be nice if it was really true? That there really was some sort of "the law of attraction" allows people to simply send vibrations that will attract like vibrations. In other words, if you think it, you will get it.
Oddly the example people often use of magnets should be obvious to even a second grader. Remember when they showed us how the same poles repulsed the same? Ie North attracted South.
Wishful thinking is a developmental stage that all children engage in and there is a nostalgia to it. but there really isn't any scientific data to support the concept that you can just think something and cause it to happen by sending out a vibration which will bring an external object to you or affect another person or affect a future event all by itself.
The point is we all want to find solutions, help ourselves and have some control over getting what we want out of our lives. Sometimes we want it so badly that we are willing to believe anything. Particularly if it promises results by simply wishing for something without working for it. There is no free ride.
I would never buy a self help book from an author who didn't have the credentials but this book became a national best seller. Millions of people believe that wanting something will make it happen. There is nothing wrong with hope or wishful thinking but it is just the first step. You come up with the idea and then do the hard work of implementing it. The reality is that change requires hard work, relationships, knowledge, experience, not just an idea or a concept.
On the other hand I am hoping really really hard that someone might have both the ideas, the experience and the vision to lead this country forward. I leave that choice up to all of you.
