I just voted for the first time ever in my life. I am 18 years old now, and was very excited to be able to cast a ballot for Barack Obama.
There have been literally thousands of these diaries in the past week, so going to try to not going to get boring or repetitive here. I am in Israel on a post-high-school program (Young Judaea) and was able to vote online using Democrats Abroad. I live in Maryland (going to College Park next year, after hopefully taking off another Semester to join a political campaign), which might actually have an important say next Tuesday.
I was torn between Edwards and Obama, but then Edwards dropped out, making my decision so much easier.
Clinton is a great candidate too. It seems to me that most of the dislike of her is really based on little fact, or based on one or two statements that she may have said, which are usually taken out of context. Regardless, I voted for Obama because he represents, to me, real change, and because of the electability factor. We can disregard polls and whatever, but anyone here that ever has had a recent political discussion knows that so many people--- Republicans, Independents, and even Democrats-- have their mind already made up about Clinton. If we want real change and we want to win, Obama seems the better choice.
In 2004, like many here, I was really into the Dean Campaign--- then was devastated (and really cold) in Iowa.... following which Kerry wrapped up the nomination. Kerry was a good candidate, but in November 2004 it really seemed like we were voting AGAINST Bush, rather than FOR Kerry. I dont want it to seem like this time I am voting AGAINST Clinton rather than FOR Barack. So I just want to re-emphasize the fact that Clinton too is a great candidate. I am voting FOR Barack because he inspires me and so many in my generation. Just 40 years ago, the young generation really was instrumental in ending the Vietnam war--- today it seems most people under 30 are so apathetic.
I really think, based on so many of my friends I have been talking to, that Obama can end this apathy. He really can inspire us, and will turn up the young vote not just for this election but for so many to come!
Think about it guys--- the slogan he is being known for and will continue to use is YES WE CAN. Something amazing really is happening.
Furthermore, Obama's positions are nearly totally in line with mine, and I look forward to working for him when I get home in June until the election.
Anyway, its 7 hours later here than Eastern Time, and 10 hours later than California time. If I sleep tonight, when I get up tomorrow the California results will be still coming in. Gonna be a pretty exciting night.
