I had the honor of pulling the lever of our 50 year old voting machines twice today. Once for myself and once for my elderly neighbor who's sight is fading fast.
For more on this (what I think is an) interesting story, you can check out the two diaries I wrote on the subject this week:
Damn! Turns out I might HAVE TO vote for Hillary.
and the follwup
I get to vote for Obama TWICE on Tuesday!
Anyway, the polling place we go to wasn't crowded. We were in and out in minutes.
I had seen some of the earlier diaries about longtime, registered voters whose names were no longer on the voting lists at polling places they had been been voting at for many years.
More below the fold...
So, after we voted I asked the volunteers at our district table if they had had any problems and evidentially it is happening in my district in NYC as well.
If I remember correctly, I'm in NYC's 3rd district (down in Chelsea for those of you who know the area).
It seems long time voters' names have suddenly disappeared from the registered lists in my district as well.
One volunteers held up and brown manila envelope filled with filled-out, provisional ballots. He was pretty surprised at how many there were and asked if I knew anything about it.
I told him I don't really, only that it is happening, and that's only because of the stories I'm seeing here on DK.
So, something is going on. It's going to have to be looked into by party officials.
How can people who have been voting regularly for 10 or 20 years, at the same polling place, suddenly be removed from the voter lists?
How can people who voted this past November(!) suddenly not be on the lists?
All I do know is I was prepared for a battle by the time I got to my polling place but thankfully, it wasn't necessary.
I'm sorry to hear that there are so many people having problems.
YES. WE. CAN.
