If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing. -- Anatole France.
How long do we have to put up with this third-rate game show host? I know the whole "Let the Republicans beat themselves senseless" was a good idea, but seriously, it's like keeping that bad singer on "American Idle" because they make you laugh.
Let's just skip the fact that Romney went from liberal Republican to Reagan clone in a few short years. Let's ignore the fact that he has little to show for his talk of being a true conservative. Let's not ponder too much over the fact that he can't even beat Mike Huckabee, who's a one-trick political pony if I've ever saw one.
Mitt Romney is just too damn foolish to be President of the United States.
It's better to watch this in all of it's ugly glory:
Are you as sick and confused as I was? Probably. This was just as bad as his "Reagan-Clinton House" blabber. But notice how he's desperately trying to steal the thunder form both Clinton's and Obama's repsective messages?
I didn't catch it at first either, but thank the Internets for transcripts:
Now, I know there are some who think that can all be done from Washington, but when it comes time to thinking about how we’re going to guide our economy, I think it’s more important to know how America works than to know how Washington works. And I think it’s helpful to have...
(APPLAUSE)
And when it comes time to think about how our economy is going to build great jobs for our kids and their kids, and maintain the great military we have through our economic strength, I think it’s important to have a president who’s actually had a job in the private sector...
(APPLAUSE)
You see — you see, at a time like this — at a time like this we recognize just how broken Washington is. We’ve looked to them to solve our problems, and they haven’t.
We asked them to solve Social Security. They haven’t done that. We asked them to balance the budget. They haven’t.
We asked them as well to rein in excessive pork barrel spending. They haven’t.
AUDIENCE: They haven’t!
M. ROMNEY: We asked them to get health care that was affordable and portable for all of us. And they haven’t.
AUDIENCE: They haven’t!
M. ROMNEY: We asked them to get education that’s the best in the world. They haven’t.
AUDIENCE: They haven’t!
M. ROMNEY: We asked them to live by high ethical standards. And they haven’t.
AUDIENCE: They haven’t!
M. ROMNEY: We asked them to end illegal immigration. And they haven’t.
AUDIENCE: And they haven’t!
M. ROMNEY: We asked them to get us off of foreign oil and let us be able to be energy-independent. And they haven’t.
AUDIENCE: And they haven’t!
M. ROMNEY: It’s time for the politicians to leave Washington and for we, the people, to take over!
(APPLAUSE)
This — this isn’t just about the heart and soul of our party. It isn’t just about which part is going to win in November. This is the about the future course of our country.
This is about whether or not Washington will finally deal with the challenges we face, whether Washington is up to the task of helping solve these problem, taking advantage of opportunities, making sure that our kids and their kids live in an America that’s the greatest nation on Earth. It must be. It has always been.
The world depends upon our sacrifice, our commitment, and dedication to peace and prosperity and to liberty. This is the greatest nation in the history of the Earth. We will keep it the hope of the Earth. With your help, we’ll do it together.
Thank you so much!
It is to laugh. I had no idea that it was Team Romney that was banging on the White house door for seven years, begging for the will of the people to be heard. After all, it was Bush (as the president) who sets the agenda, has access to the media to push his agenda, and has power over both the military and various agencies to enforce his agenda. Bush didn't care about spending until the Democrats (barely) took Congress. His Social Security ideas got rejected the more people heard them. His reckless war/occupation, combined with keeping the tax cuts during "wartime" made balancing the budget nearly impossible. the money drug companies gave him and his party (which is Mitt's party, BTW) neutered any hope of effective health care. No Child Left Behind was Bush's idea, and when it passed, he refused to fully fund it.
The Bush Administration will never be classified as ethical, but it almost pales in comparison to the GOP scandals that cost them the House and Senate. The "government" Romney blames actually went against Bush's immigration plan. And as for oil dependency...what does Romney expect from a guy who was (and still is) an oilman?
With this in mind, I wonder why Romney has the following views on:
TAXES
ROMNEY: Now, I also support the Bush tax cuts.
IMMIGRATION
ROMNEY: We secure the border, we have the fence, we have enough border patrol agents to secure the border and we have employment verification system of some kind.
IRAQ SURGE
ROMNEY: I met with my staff and announced that day that I supported a surge. The president announced later that day the entire program.
IRAQ WITHDRAWAL
ROMNEY: We cannot turn Iraq over to al Qaeda and have al Qaeda have a safe haven from which they could recruit people to carry out bombings, to attack this country and our friends around the world. It’s unthinkable. And that’s why I will not walk away from Iraq until we have been successful and finish that job.
HEALTH CARE
ROMNEY: I don’t think we would say it’s better off than it was eight years ago, to be truthful. I think the eight years that you’ve seen — and I don’t blame that on President Bush. I blame that on Washington.
From here, it doesn't look like he has any problem with Washington, or at least the section occupied by the White house. Maybe he's talking about Congress, but then the question is: Where the hell was he when Republicans were rubberstamping Bush's policies? Again, up until fall 2006, everything Congress did was something the Bush Administration wanted.
And even if he was trying to blame the Democratic Congress for "not doing anything," two points. One: Bush's Surge effectively castrated Congress for most of 2007. Two: Congress did alot in their first 100 hours, and since then, the Republican minority has worked hard to curb anything resembling progress.
Does Romney actually believe that he can make a difference? He can't even get his own party's coalition together.
I'm so glad our side doesn't have to deal with this guy.
