In the end, Mitt Romney didn't drop out of the presidential race because he trails John McCain by more than 400 delegates. It wasn't because he had already wasted nearly $40 million of his own money. It wasn't even because he no longer wanted his children in harm's way. No, in the end he dropped out because he loves America:
I must now stand aside, for our party and our country. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win."
