There have been some excellent diaries of late discussing Texas and our politics. Let's be honest - we're a mess right now. A preview of the Republican Civil War was fought here in 2006 during the governor's race. I know many conservative Republican voters who can't stand John McCain and call him a Democrat. I just look at them and wonder what the Hell they're smoking.
We have the screwy hybrid system of assigning delegates. You vote in the primary and declare your party affiliation AND then you can go to the caucuses that happen later that night. So, a determined voter gets to vote twice - legally!
I live here and even I forget that the delegates are based on state senate districts, not congressional ones.

Below is a master link for demographic data on Houston.
Houston Demographics
Here are some links to some demographic maps of Houston. Please keep in mind that Houston has experienced tremendous changes to the urban core since 2000. So take some of those trends with the idea that some of those sections may be new areas and two, things could have changed a great deal. Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 scrambled a few areas some, but I don't know to what extent.

A quick Texas overview.
Quick demographic take on Texas
I've posted all this to people know something about the diversity and complexity of Texas. I've seen comments about winning Houston and that gets you the state. No, not true. We do hold around 10% of the population, but that doesn't mean jack.
I thought I'd add some info for people to look at and get a feel for the size of one city and the a look at the state. Winning Texas for anyone will be a chore. We look forward to getting a chance to see the candidates and talk about issues that are important, not only to Democrats, but all Americans.
