As Dems work to get out the vote in the next few primaries, a quick reminder of what we know really works when it comes to mobilizing voters.
Before you get started, be sure you are prepared to answer questions:
When and where can someone vote? How can I be sure I am registered? Will I have to declare a party affiliation? Can I get a ride to the polls?
Most election officials and newspapers will print information, so get a few copies to pass out! Most full page flyers make great 1/4 sheet handouts and you can customize the back with a google map.
- THE PERSONAL ASK! More than any other strategy, asking someone to go vote in a face to face conversation works best. I traditionally start with friends and family, reminding them when the election is and pointing them to a polling place. I then branch out to mobilizing the bigger community, sometimes through a campaign or the party, sometimes just for the fun of it.
- Offer Information instead of waiting for them to ask: Some people are shy about asking questions (especially when faced with an enthusiastic "expert". work up a brief, informative pitch and smile a lot.
"Hi, my name is (your name) and I was checking to make sure you are going to vote (insert day and date) and it's not too far from here (describe location). (Hand them a flyer) If you need a ride (share info) someone can come pick you up. Can I be sure you will get out to vote?"
- You catch more bees with honey: You might be covered in campaign buttons. Certainly some of us wear our candidates on our sleeves, but when you go knocking on doors to get out the vote people are more likely to be impressed with NOT promoting an agenda. The undecided don't like to be pushed so close to a primary, not face to face. They can read your t-shirt, let them be pleasantly disarmed with your passion for democracy.
It might be a deciding moment.
For me, mobilization at the local level has become a ritual of effective silliness. I print up maps, dress as the Election Fairy, and hit retail traffic near polling places. Funny thing, nobody wants to disappoint the Election Fairy and I end up sending hordes of voters to the polls.
Have fun!
