I've taken a while to think about how and why my original candidate, John Edwards, dropped out.
However, I've decided that sour grapes is not the answer. I'll explain why.
I was a follower of John Edwards (and I still am) and nothing hurt me more than his standings in several primary/caucus states. Nothing hurt me more than the fact that the mainstream media had chosen to ignore him. Nothing hurt me more than Obama supporters that wanted me to abandon him.
I even wrote two diaries in support of him: It's official: I'm serious about Edwards and Edwards has got my vote.
But, I'm not going to use this experience in a negative way. I'm not going to sell out my party and its' candidates. I always considered myself an independent and in the past, I have voted both Republican (mainly state contests) and Democrat, as well as Progressive (Anthony Pollina) and Independent (Bernie Sanders, Cornelius Hogan and Jim Jeffords). If you're not familiar with those names, that's fine. Just a bit of voting history there.
I usually only support candidates that represent my view of the world, which is far left/left of center/progressive and whatever you choose to call it.
I've decided that because Barack Obama and John Edwards were quite close on some issues and seem to have a similar agenda (well Edwards did till he dropped out), I'm going to support Barack Obama for President of the United States in November of 2008.
From what I saw in Democratic debates, Obama came off as professional, polished and a far cry from the Republican candidates and their bickering. I've forgiven Obama for the bickering that he engaged in with Hillary Clinton. There will always be ideological differences and sometimes, it's hard to avoid getting personal.
Now, before you think about throwing stones at me, I have nothing against Hillary Clinton. I am just seeking out change in our system. I'm seeking accountability on the part of our public officials. I'm seeking something other than the Bush-Clinton dynasty.
I think Barack Obama will make a hell of a President.
No candidate is perfect. They all have their skeletons. Obama is different from other candidates because he inspires hope in the hearts of his supporters (much like John Edwards did) and I personally believe that he will make a fine leader.
One last note:
I'm also disappointed in people who've decided to abandon the Democratic cause and vote for John McCain. You should be ashamed of yourselves. By voting for John McCain, you will continue the evil deeds of the Bush administration.
Another last note:
Barack, please reach out to John Edwards. I want Edwards to be part of the Obama administration in some capacity, preferably Attorney General. Please realize that you have a lot to gain by having people like John Edwards and the American people on your side.
I expect to donate a bit of moolah to Obama in a few weeks. Good tidings and onward to victory!
