Gun control is an issue that does not have nearly enough support among the current group of Democrats. Although most do support gun control, they certainly haven't done any legislating to show their support. Granted there are bigger problems but this quote from John Tester just pissed me off. Join me below the fold for more.
Here is what the newly elected Jon Tester had to say about the current Supreme Court case on the constitutionally of Washington D.C.'s gun control law:
"We're talking about law-abiding folks -- like you and me -- who cannot exercise their rights simply because of the city they live in," said Sen. Jon Tester, D-Montana. "Our founders didn't intend for the laws to be applied to some folks and not to others. They didn't mean for the laws to apply at some times and not others."
Considering that D.C has the highest rate of deaths by firearm in the U.S. and that, at least in my view, we are supposed to be the party for gun control, you would think Tester might abstain from commenting or at least not come out in favor of loosening gun laws in D.C.
Anyways, Tester along with 55 other senators and 250 House Representatives signed submitted an "amicus" brief urging the Supreme Court to strike down D.C.'s handgun law, which basically bans the ownership of handguns.
Finally, this quote clearly illustrates the ongoing problem our party is having with unity:
Sixty-eight Democrats in the House and nine in the Senate were joined(sic) a larger Republican bloc filing the brief.
Enough said. We need real Democrats. Maybe The Big Tent is just too damn big.
