I live in Shoreline, King County, just north of Seattle. My local precinct met at a local school gym along with four other precincts. Voters started arriving an hour early and by 1:00PM (the official start of the process) the facility where we were meeting was overwhelmed - a large turnout was anticipated and even under those circumstances turnout was greater than anyone expected. Not everyone was able to get inside. Finally the organizers of the caucus had to split up the precincts so everyone could be accommodated. My precinct met in a separate facility and the excitement and enthusiasm was palpable.
After moving through the process when the final decision was made among the over 120 participants in my precinct the final tally was Obama 80% Clinton 20%. As I was leaving I spoke to voters from several of the other precincts and, although the split wasn't as dramatic in the others, Obama appears to have carried all five precincts comfortably.
I was impressed and, I must admit, pleasantly surprised at the intelligent, articulate comments from those who spoke during the "debate" part of the meeting. I am basically a cynic, but today's experience makes me a bit more hopeful that maybe, just maybe, a brighter political future looms.
