The slogan Remember 9/11 is thinly veiled code for Will for Revenge.
Remember 911 is not to be read literally. The bearers of this slogan dont know much about what happened. Virtually all of these people don't know shit about 911.
Of course, that's not the point. You can even ask them. They will tell you so, if they say anything at all. Verbalization of ideas might be too much to ask for. An incredulous look, a roll of the eyeballs, is generally the most you'll get as often as not, if you dare to ask one of the slogan bearers what they know about 911, if you dare. "I know enough" might really be all they know. I would take them at their word, because cases exist where further inquiry as to their knowledge has resulted in attempts at verbal and physical intimidation and retaliatory behavior.
No, the point of Remember 911 is, an exhortation to peers to remember there's some revenge still due. And no matter what revenge we have done already, there's always room for more revenge. Revenge is the thirst that will not be slaked.
Remember 911 is not about the past.
Remember 911 is about the present, and the near future.
Remember 911 is a war drum whose purpose is to motivate each other toward action in the near future.
Remember 911 has nothing to do with remembering facts of any sort.
Remember 911 is everything to do with remembering a 'patriotic' will for infinite, bloody, blind revenge.
Blind revenge: al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, Afghanistan, Iraq, the precise target is not really important at all. Iran is just as good. So is Syria, Lebanon, even Venezuela. Bad People. Brown People.
Infinite revenge: Like Jello, there's always room for more. 100 Years for Revenge is even McCain's political marketing slogan, a nearly mainstream presidential candidate and long time senator.
Remember 911 is barely code, in that it is in plain view almost daily on the bumper stickers of citizens' trucks.
Revenge is what keeps the world going 'round.
Pick any spot in the world where there is ongoing strife. Both sides claim to be getting attacked. Both sides claim the upper ground.
The drums of war is what Remember 911 is.
Whether there is a president to beat these drums of war, or not, it does not matter much. Enough American citizens will continue to beat the drums of war regardless.
The choice of president is overblown, I am afraid. The election just does not change things as much as we might hope.
We can change a president.
We cannot change our citizens all that much. We still have ourselves to face, and we are not going anywhere soon.
