Obama and I are roughly the same age. I grew up in liberal circles in New York City — a place to which people who wished to rebel against their upbringings had gravitated for generations. And yet, all of my mixed race, black/white classmates throughout my youth, some of whom I am still in contact with, were the product of very culturally specific unions. They were always the offspring of a white mother, (in my circles, she was usually Jewish, but elsewhere not necessarily) and usually a highly educated black father. And how had these two come together at a time when it was neither natural nor easy for such relationships to flourish? Always through politics. No, not the young Republicans. Usually the Communist Youth League. Or maybe a different arm of the CPUSA. But, for a white woman to marry a black man in 1958, or 60, there was almost inevitably a connection to explicit Communist politics.

I've wondered why it is that certain Republicans seemed to have cornered the market on Teflon.  No matter what Reagan did, it didn't stick.  For 5-6 years Bush could do anything and it didn't stick.  Dodge military service, use cocaine, whatever, it really didn't matter.

I think there's two parts to it.  Part is the Republican noise machine, and we're sort of stuck with that.

Another part is attitude.  The Republicans act like whatever they did is no big deal and people just roll with it.  Contrast that with Dick Durban crying on the Senate floor that he didn't mean to dis the troops.  Contrast that with John Kerry giving up his presidential bid because he flubbed a joke.

I'm crossing my fingers, hoping that Obama has a bit of the teflon in his suit as well.

I stopped caring a long time ago about what pissants like those booger pickers over at LGF and Free Republic think.

I stopped arguing with global warming denialists a long time ago.  Anyone who'd sell their kids down the river for a tax cut and an SUV doesn't deserve the time of day from me.  They don't give a shit about anyone except themselves.  You know what?  That's fine. If they already have someone looking out for them, then I don't need to do shit for them.  

I stopped worrying about the opinion of someone who would willingly deny children healthcare, food, and quality education.  

I stopped worrying about people who think that the only experience in life is the one they've had.

I stopped worrying about someone who would think that the color of a person's skin has anything to do with the quality of that person as a human  being.  

I stopped.  I just stopped.  They don't matter to me.  

I quit caring about someone who will ignorantly refuse to accept the real science that explains our origins, yet will seek medical care and medication developed using the same science.

I just don't care anymore.

For the first time in a long time, Bill Kristol may be right about something -- namely, what the "American people" think. That doesn't make it true. Half the country doesn't "believe" in evolution.

Seriously, can you name something to be proud of about the disastrous basketcase that has been this country since the onset of Reaganism? No matter how much Michelle Obama clarifies or retracts, she was completely correct in what she said -- or almost completely, since I don't necessarily think there's a lot to be proud of right now, either.

I feel relief, maybe. Relief that there's a chance -- however slight -- that the Republican juggernaut will finally be turned back this November. I know he has long been annoying.  It is not news.  But on the "plagiarism" thing:

Matthews used to be a speechwriter, as he likes to tell his audience frequently.  He knows perfectly well none of these people write their own speeches.  Or at least that a lot of the words that come out of their mouths are scripted by others.  

So calling Obama a plagiarist is total BS, and he knows it.  If anything, the speechwriter could be a plagiarist.  Except key Obama people have worked for Deval Patrick in the past.  It's possible that the same writer's work was given to both of 'em.

It's good stuff.  Worth recycling.  Sometimes the words being used are being examined like when the tabloids used to ridicule Princess Diana for wearing the same dress twice.

I'm just making it up.  But my guess is that this is how it happened.  People like Chris Matthews are just manipulating it for drama.  Total cynicism on their part; no concern for the benefit of the country, or the planet.

Aside from that?  No there here.

But it is not, it is Taylor Marsh too.  I really don't care for the hyper-Clinton partisanship displayed on her site, or the fact that she doesn't know the difference between pride and love.  But I was deeply disturbed by the comments that I read, more disturbed than when I visit freeperville, because I have always felt they, the batshit crazies, were excusable, because, well..., they are crazy.  So here was my comment:

I found your conflation of 'love' and 'pride' disingenuous. She never said she didn't love her country, she said she was now finally proud. Ms. Marsh did you 'love' the Hidathia massacre, Abu Graib torture, and warrantless wire tapping? Wouldn't it be fair to say that you were not proud of those events; but, that the love of your country made you want them to be acknowledged and to seek accountability? Pride and love are not the same things, and I think you understand that point very well. Too well to have written what you wrote with pride in authorship, or do you just love being out of context?

Somebody more eloquent than me needs to take Taylor Marsh to task, somone who dosen't feel ill when they read the comments by what are supposed to pass for Democratic Party members.  These folks have slipped a cog in their support of Ms. Clinton.  I didn't know that there were "progressives" that took the form of her posters.  Yeecch!

So what if they think they can exploit Barack Obama's so-called "plagiarism?"  In the span of two years, their party has enthusiastically fallen in line behind child molesters, puppet regimes, war criminals, tortures and torture-enablers, traitors, domestic eavesdroppers, and all other manner of scofflaw.

Remember that Obama’s biggest fundraising night of the campaign was the night he lost the New Hampshire primary: a Wisconsin defeat - even though, again, I don’t think it likely - would probably just have the effect of rallying his supporters into giving more money, working harder, and creating an even bigger wave heading into the March 4 primaries. Ability to suffer setbacks gracefully is what separates the winners from the losers. And it’s a large part of what has happened so far in the Democratic nomination fight.

As a smart commentator here pointed out, the evidence is already in: the national TV news programs tonight basically reported the dust-up in a way that made the Clinton campaign look as silly as it deserved to look, throwing petty stones from a glass house.

Most of the reason the mud is flying is bait the victim into doing something stupid, you-tube it, and talk about it on TV.

majorities and taking back the presidency, one of our side's challenges is to get Democrats to start thinking and feeling like winners again, and Republicreeps to start thinking and feeling like the losers (that they've always been deep down) again. There is a difference between winning, and thinking and feeling like a winner, just as there's a difference between losing, and thinking and feeling like a loser. Reality tends to follow self-perception as much as self-perception tends to follow reality. So we have to transform our party into one that doesn't just win, but thinks of itself as the naturally winning party. And we have to do the exact opposite to the other side, and get them to start thinking of themselves as the naturally losing party.

Basically, punch huge holes in their undeserved and over the top hubristic and entitled sense of being the country's natural governing party, free to shove its fascistic ideology and policies down our collective throats whether we like it or not. Don't just beat them, but make them feel beaten, to knock the spirit out of their miserable pond scum-like souls and make them run to mamma screaming like a bunch of bedwetting pantywaist creepazoids going "Whaaaaaaah!"!

Only once they're beaten both electorally and in spirit will they be ready to rejoin the political arena as legitimate adversaries worthy of our respect and non-contemptuous attention.

This will, of course, take years. I can wait. Boy can I ever.

I understand that Obama is "post-partisan" and that he represents "hope" and "change".  But if his starry-eyed supporters thought the right-wing wouldn't fight back, you were mistaken.

Why would the right-wing buy into all this "change" stuff?  Change is a bad thing for them.

The 527s will try to cast just enough doubt, in just enough "centrist" minds, in just the right states, to make this election another close one. And it will work as it always does. At least well- enough to make it very close.
