Below is a breakdown of how each candidate has spent his or her money so far in both nominal and %-terms. To me it seems that Obama spent his funds more wisely.
Summary:
- Obama spent significantly (29%) more on "Salaries & Benefits," than Hillary, but only half as much on "Rent/Utilities."
- Obama spent twice as much on "Fundraising," 10 vs 5%.
- Obama spent 17% more on "Media" than Hillary, but interestingly he spent 82% of his total media budget on "Miscellaneous Media,"(?) and only 7% of it on "Broadcast Media," whereas Hillary spent 72% of her media budget on "Broadcast Media," and only 16.5% on "Miscellaneous Media."
- Consultants were only 4.7% of Hillary's total budget, and 1.9% of Obama's, but that's 2.5 times more for Hillary - I'd ask for a refund if I were her.
- FWIW, Obama spent over twice as much on "Polling/Surveys/Research" as Hillary
I got the figures from opensecrets.org. Here's pic of an Excel summary I made:
Disclaimer/Political views: I've been more or less pro-Obama since Russ Feingold announced he wouldn't run. I like Hillary too, and she might even make a better president, but I've been very impressed by Obama, and I believe it's important to send an anti-dumb war signal to the political establishment by electing Obama over Hillary. That should make future politicians think twice before accepting the current establishment thinking that says opposing wars makes you unelectable, or makes you look weak on national security.
