Welcome to the late, late, late shift! For those of you who are still out there (Early Birds? Night Owls? Europeans?), join me for our next installment of this fundraiser for a great Kossack candidate, Gilda Reed!
"A Scholar and a Congresswoman"
I first noticed Gilda here on DailyKos when she replied to so many of the comments in her first Recommended diary. It enthused me to see a candidate so invested in responding to her supporters, a quality I believe that all representatives need to possess to truly uphold their end of the democratic process.
But what made me really appreciate Gilda’s candidacy all the more is her other career as a professor at the University of New Orleans. Our democracy is stronger when we elect people from a broad, diverse range of backgrounds, and I think electing a scholar trained in how to shape an argument and engage in rigorous analysis can only benefit our country. Gilda’s work is in neuroscience, and while I can’t say I understand too much of what her research is on, I can say that if she’s got the brains and the fortitude to understand how the brain works, she can clearly handle anything Congress throws at her. (Though I might be overestimating the number of neurons in Congress.)
Most impressively, she earned her three degrees from UNO while raising seven children! Gilda silenced all of the the naysayers who doubted her capabilities when she became a professor. In her interview last month with Blue Mondays, Gilda spoke about her career as an educator:
"When I’m told that children are not going to make it in college, and they try to sour me on a student, I don’t listen! I have some of the most—you would not expect—unexpected youngsters, that are now college grads. I don’t take no for an answer, I’m a fighter! I have a backbone. I have a voice and I’m not afraid to use it."
Gilda’s career is marked by an unending struggle to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. She strives to lift up her students throught the power of education.
Now, let’s help Gilda carry on her fight, all the way to Washington, D.C. The people of Louisiana’s 1st District are in need of strong representation, they’re in need of Gilda Reed.
Donate here and help support this proud Democrat in her special election campaign.
