Think back to a month ago. Most Democrats said the same thing, "I support [insert candidate name here] but I'd be willing to vote for anyone we run."
A lot has happened since then. States were told that they didn't matter. Voters were told that they didn't matter. Weird strategies involving converting delegates were floated. The conversation got bitter and poisoned.
...and then came last night...
Clinton had a couple of chances to attack Obama and she blew most of them off. Would Obama be a good Commander in Chief? Eh, let's talk about health care. Should the Superdelegates have some important role? Oh, it'll work out somehow. OK, there was the one Xerox line, but she had the chance to go scorched earth and chose not to time and again.
As a result, by the end of the debate, we were back to where we were a month ago. Barring something bizarre happening, Clinton isn't going to win. I still prefer Obama and am excited to have him as our nominee. However, last night reminded me of the Hillary Clinton that I would have been more than happy to work for if she won the general. It's probably too late now to help her, but one wonders what would have happened with a different staff.
Thank you Senator Hillary Clinton for putting the party and the country ahead of your own personal ambitions. Hopefully, you'll be making us proud in the years and decades to come.
