Sick cows, collapsed on the ground and poked into lurching up, on unsteady legs, towards the slaughterhouse by by forklift trucks ? Is this a tasty char-broiled and delectable tableaux of modern animal husbandry ? Or is it a modern day dystopic picture of animal farming gone very, very bad ?
Are these 'mad cows', or should they be mad and should we be mad too - not to mention disgusted and ashamed ?
Normally I don't work this reporting beat, but my wife has taken to reading Michael's Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma" and- based on that book -she has decided that she and I both need to change our eating habits. What can I say ? I've long known about the Meatrix...
Meet the Meatrix. It's been popularized first, in prototypical form, as Francis Moore Lappe's "Diet For a Small Planet". The truth of the Meatrix- where your meat, cheese, eggs and dairy products now come from- really should make you vomit, and I'm more culpable than most reading this... I've known for decades.
Meet the Meatrix, which makes much of what you put in your mouth and call food..
Here's the official Meatrix website:
