I live in the first House district of Mississippi. The member from here (Roger Wicker) was tapped by Marble Mouth to go serve out Lott's term (until the special election). So, we now face a special election for the House seat.
Given this is Mississippi, you know the candidates will be conservative. How conservative you may wonder? Follow me across the jump and gaze in wonder....
We got a mailing from a candidate today. Because it is so astounding, I scanned it in.
Here is the front.
Here is the back.
The front features a large font announcing "THE RIGHT TO LIFE," while the image is of a hand reaching down to a infant's hand. Very much mirrors the classic image of the hand of God. Subtle, eh?
The back has a photo of the candidate and his family, with a line saying he "believes government must answer to a Higher Power." (The bold and caps are in the mailer.) He makes reference to traditional marriage, right to life, and innocent unborn lives. (For what it is worth, are any unborn lives lacking in innocence?)
Under the subhead "A Christian Home," he notes his faith drives him to public service, and he will never be ashamed of his values or his commitments. (Seriously, I am not sure what he is running against here. Are many officials ashamed of their values? Maybe some should be, but are they?)
Under the subhead "Standing Firm," he notes he "opposes all of Washington's attempts to take God out of public life," and encourages us all to "stand together and reject the Hollywood values that are hurting the moral fabric of our culture."
In the last section, he says he will not just "vote right," but will champion conservative Mississippi values.
This is a conservative state, but probably to a degree lost on some of you. Come visit. The food and music are wonderful, most of the people are wonderfully nice, and the wingers are endlessly entertaining. Well, except for the ones in office....
